One dead after shooting at wedding in France

A man in his 30s was killed and several others injured in a shooting at a Turkish wedding in northeastern France, police said.

French media reported that three armed, hooded men arrived at the wedding venue in Thionville late on Saturday night before opening fire on guests.

Citing police sources, Le Figaro newspaper said the attackers arrived at 01:15 local time to “resolve a conflict between well-known gangs in the Moselle”.

Police said a pregnant woman was among the injured and three others were in critical condition at a nearby Bel-Air hospital.

According to French media, about 100 people were celebrating at Eden Palace when gunmen arrived at the event in a 4×4 car, in the Lorraine region near the borders of Germany and Luxembourg.

AFP quoted a police source as saying: “At 1:15 a.m., a group of people went out to smoke in front of the hall and then three heavily armed men opened fire on them.”

The men are believed to have used automatic weapons and handguns.

Prosecutor Nancy Francois Capin-Dulhoste said in a statement that the men fired “several dozen shots,” adding that four people were hit. The victims were believed to be between 25 and 50 years old.

When emergency services arrived, the attackers had fled the scene.

Local newspaper Le Républicain Lorrain reported that police were investigating whether the car came from Germany or Luxembourg – some 15km (9.3 miles) away.

The Lorraine border area is plagued by drug-related violence.

According to Le Parisien newspaper, the deaths and injuries were all determined by the authorities to be related to drugs.

In May 2023, in the neighboring town of Villerupt, a shootout between rival gangs injured five people.
