By the age of 8, he had learned to play the guitar and started singing ranchera. After a brief stint working odd jobs in Tijuana, where his family moved after his father lost his farm, Fernández returned to Jalisco to pursue a full-time music career in 1960, working as a troubadour and occasional appearances on television.
