Nurburgring race track increases speed requirements when driving for tourists

The legendary Nurburgring has increased the minimum speed requirement for drivers taking part in Tourist Drive on the Nordschleife or Grand Prix circuit.

Based on Roads and TracksThe track will now require drivers to have a vehicle capable of reaching speeds of at least 80 mph (130 km/h).

Anyone with a driver’s license can sign up for a hot lap at the famous Nurburgring in the Tourist Drive event for €30-35 (AU$49-57).

Along with the new minimum speed requirement, participants are not allowed to drift, stop along the track, and must comply with vehicle noise limits below 130dB.

New restrictions may exclude some classic cars from the track. Before the new regulation, vehicles had a minimum speed requirement of 30 mph (48 km/h).

Some tourists will be able to rest easier knowing they won’t be left struggling with some of the weaker vehicles to climb the hill between Bergwerk and Klosertal.

It’s worth noting that the Autobahn in Germany has a recommended speed limit of 80mph (130km/h).

Safety requirements increase after a fatal collision in 2021, resulting in the 21.8km track adding warning lights throughout the track similar to those in high-end motorsport. .

Nikola Koprivica, 34, was killed when his Mazda MX-5 crashed into a truck approaching a disabled vehicle that spilled liquid on the track near the corner of Bergwerk. Seven people were taken to hospital and Koprivica died at the scene.
