The Paralympic Games will open in Paris tonight, attracting some 4,400 athletes to compete in nearly 200 events over the next week and a half. The athletes have all overcome enormous challenges in their lives, including amputations or diseases that have left them blind. They will compete in 22 different sports, most of which have Olympic equivalents. In total, nearly 550 medals will be awarded.
