When he overtakes Allen, it will only strengthen Curry’s case as the greatest shooter in NBA history.
In light of his historic record, let’s take a closer look at the NBA’s all-time leaders in terms of 3-pointers taken, some of the records Curry has held, and which players are the most important. Biggest threat to catch him in the record books.
NBA 3-pointers set a record
The NBA record for three-pointers hasn’t changed much over the years.
In 2005, Reggie Miller retired with a total of 2,560 3 throws to his name, setting an all-time record. It wasn’t until February 10, 2011, that Allen overtook Miller to become the NBA leader in terms of 3-pointers taken. Allen retired in 2014 with 2,973 career pointers.
Allen and Miller placed first and second respectively until Curry overtook Miller on January 23, 2021.
Curry is now just 9 3 points away from forcing Allen and 10 3 3 points to advance to first place. He’s also just 36 3-pointers behind him after 3,000 3-pointers in his career, a milestone no other player has yet achieved.

What records does Stephen Curry hold?
Curry already holds quite a few 3-point shooting records.
During the 2012-13 season, Curry hit a total of 272 triples, breaking Allen’s record at the time for most threes in a single season. He broke his own record in the 2014-15 season when he hit 286 3-pointers. He did it again in 2015-16 when he hit 402 3-pointers, which is still an all-time high.
Curry currently accounts for 5 of the 10 most 3-pointed seasons in NBA history.

How many 3-pointers can Stephen Curry end his career with?
Curry’s name is all over the record books. The crazy part? He shows no signs of slowing down.
In 2020-21, Curry leads the league in scoring for the second time in his career with an average of 32.0 points per game. He peaked in his career at both 3-pointers (5.3) and efforts (12.7) per game that season while creating 41.6% of his chances.
Across 23 games this season, Curry is once again among the league leaders in scoring with 27.7 points per game, and he’s once again set a career record with three points ( 5.5) and the number of attempts (13,2) per game. He established himself as the leader for MVP with his early-season game.
Curry is currently on the pace to make 445 3-shots this season, a number that would break his own record of 3 3-takes in a single season.
Health provided, Curry will create a lot of distance between him and Allen.
After signing a four-year extension in 2021, Curry’s current contract will take him through to the 2025-26 season.
THAN: Is this Stephen Curry’s best season ever?
Most likely the player will catch Stephen Curry
Of the active players, Harden and Lillard are closest to Curry, but both are about the same age. Considering there was already a decent distance between them, it was hard to imagine either of them would catch Curry. (Of the two, Harden is probably the one with the best shot.)
Klay Thompson is another contender, but missing two straight seasons with injury has put him back in a decent shape.
Hield (1.115) produces 3 more pointers than Curry (905) did for the first five seasons of his career, but Hield was two years older than Curry when he joined the NBA. Same deal with Robinson.
With their youth and 3s shooting time, Trae Young, Luka Doncic, Donovan Mitchell and Devin Booker are probably the biggest threats to capture Curry.
