The Jones-Emberson 1 planetary nebula is the deadly shroud of a dying Sun-like star. It is located about 1,600 light-years from Earth towards the constellation of the Sharp-Eyeed Lynx. Spanning about 4 light-years, the expanding remains of the dying star’s atmosphere are carried into interstellar space, as the source of hydrogen and then helium for the fusion of the star eventually dried up after billions of years. Visible near the center of the planetary nebula is the remains of the stellar core, a blue-hot white dwarf. Also known as PK 164 +31.1, the nebula is faint and difficult to see through a telescope’s eyepiece.
