Many Switch owners likely destroyed relationships with their friends and family this past weekend, trying to beat them at tennis or bowling in Nintendo Switch Sports. The family-friendly game launched last week, and players got together to try out the game both offline and online.
However, the online mode may not be quite as family-friendly as one would expect. Players have reported seeing disturbingly inappropriate usernames – none of which we will share here – references all manner of uncomfortable themes. Nintendo Switch Sports already has a name filtering system to catch bad language, but many people have managed to get around this.
According to the report of Eurogamerusers on Nintendo Switch Sports subreddit discussed the subject, with a few unhappy with how Nintendo handled the issue.
Another user responded to the comment above, suggesting that the game needed an “effective means of reporting people”, which it currently does not have. The only option players have currently is to block someone they’ve been up against through the Switch system settings. Miis has also allowed players to create avatars that resemble real people, which has led to a number of similarly inappropriate creations popping up online.
It’s surprising to see Nintendo ignoring this issue, as the company often stands at every opportunity for user-generated mismatches. For example, in Splatoon 2you can report other players for inappropriate activity using the Nintendo Switch Online app on your phone. Animal Crossing: New Horizon There is an in-game report button for mail, clothing designs, player profiles, and chat that don’t match. And in Smash Ultimateyou can report players you have disputed online for some reason through the “Vault” menu. Whether it’s a simple case of Nintendo not updating the game’s list of banned terms is currently unclear. This is not the only thing that has recently popped up around Nintendo Switch Sports online modes. We covered that yesterday bots are being used to potentially fill the space, with some players claiming they’ve only faced one online sport for the first time.
