More electric SUVs, less sedans: What this luxury brand has planned

When it comes to luxury cars, few people can put Hyundai on par with Mercedes-Benz or BMW.

That’s why Genesis exists – a luxury brand under the Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) that specializes in the production of high-end vehicles, allowing the Korean company to compete with reputable giants in the luxury car sector.

Launched by the Hyundai Genesis sedan in the late 2000s, Genesis became an independent brand in 2015 and now has five models on the market – and another expected next year. 2025.

The company previously confirmed new models launched from 2025 onwards will be electric, before switching to an electric-only product line from 2030.

Some current models are expected to get electric in the coming years, and others may soon be phased out.

HMG has a new generation EV platform under development, called eMwill be adaptable to a variety of applications and allow the automaker to cut costs by approximately 20%.

The Korean giant is said to be targeting a range of up to 800km with a battery as large as 113.2kWh, combined with a motor with power output between 200kW and 450kW.

Vehicles on this next-generation platform will also support over-the-air updates and a higher level of autonomous driving capabilities.

GV90

The GV90 will be Genesis’ largest SUV and it is said to go into production in December next year.

According to Korean car blogHMG has sent a request for quotation (RFQ) to its major auto partners and detailed its plans to adopt the next-generation eM EV platform for all of its models, starting with the flagship GV90. head.

In the RFQ, Hyundai estimated an annual production volume of about 21,000 GV90 units.

While there are no details on any powertrains yet, the eM platform is touted as an evolution of the existing E-GMP architecture that underpins most of the company’s new electric vehicles. Hyundai, Genesis and Kia, including new electric models. Kia EV9.

The Genesis Neolun concept was unveiled ahead of the New York auto show in 2019 March this yearis expected to be a preview of the upcoming GV90.

The flagship SUV is considered an electric rival of the BMW X7 And Mercedes-Benz GLS.

GV80

After the launch of the flagship GV90 model, the second generation GV80 is expected to launch running on electric power only.

Korean publications ET News It is expected that the first GV80 electric prototype will begin testing around the first half of 2025. It is then expected to enter mass production in the second quarter of 2026.

Like the GV90, it will use the new eM architecture.

Genesis is said to aim to produce 68,000 units per year once the second-generation GV80 launches.

While Genesis offers electric versions of the current GV70 and G80, the current GV80 does not offer electric power.

It is offered exclusively with a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine, following the discontinuation of the entry-level 2.5-litre four-speed turbocharged petrol engine and the scrapping of the 3.0 turbocharged diesel engine. Genesis’ 3.0-liter inline-four globally.

GV70

There are currently internal combustion engine and electric vehicle options available for the GV70, but Genesis is said to be developing an extended-range replacement electric vehicle (EREV) in the near future.

The GV70 EREV is expected to combine both a battery – possibly a large 40kWh battery pack – and an internal combustion engine, delivering a potential total driving range in excess of 900km.

On battery power alone, the next GV70 is said to be able to travel more than 200 km. By comparison, standard plug-in hybrids typically use smaller batteries and can travel about 40 to 80 kilometers on pure electric power.

With Genesis moving to an electric vehicle-only product line, Korean car blog suggests the GV70 EREV will bridge the gap from current internal combustion engines to future electric vehicles.

GV60

The GV60 is currently Genesis’ only vehicle built on a dedicated EV platform, meaning it will likely survive as the brand shifts away from internal combustion power.

It is currently available in two four-motor all-wheel drive variants on HMG’s e-GMP architecture, shared with Kia EV6 And Hyundai Ioniq 5. It is capable of 360kW of maximum power with 700Nm of torque in the top Performance variant and is powered by a 77.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

The GV60 is also capable of achieving a claimed range of 470km on the WLTP cycle in base AWD spec and 466km with Performance.

The GV60 first entered production in 2021 and has yet to receive a mid-life update. However, a modified version has been monitored for testing.

Only 191 Australian GV60s will be sold in 2023 and estimated annual production numbers have yet to be outlined by Hyundai.

G80

The G80 is said to be the only Genesis sedan left after another year. While it currently offers an internal combustion engine and electric power, it will likely be another all-electric vehicle in the next generation.

A mid-life update, due in the middle of this yearbrings some tweaks to the suspension, as well as an overhauled interior and mild exterior updates.

It’s available with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, both mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. There is also an Electrified version with pure electric power.

Genesis recently revealed the hot Magma concept version of both the gasoline G80 and the Electrified G80 EV.

The current second-generation G80 entered production in 2020 and competes with the likes of BMW 5 series And Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

While it’s not a big seller in Australia – just 51 will be sold here in 2023, compared to 507 BMW 5 Series models – it’s still technically a Genesis’ best-selling car since the brand’s inception.

It accounts for more than a third of the brand’s global sales from 2015 to 2023.

G70

The loser in all of this is the G70, which is expected to end soon as plans for a second generation have been scrapped.

As reported by Korean car blogThe early stages of development of the second-generation G70 saw Genesis leaning towards a much larger vehicle, which could have made it too similar to the G80.

That, along with falling sales in South Korea, is said to have prompted Genesis to scrap a new model from its plans.
