Mom spotted the dog’s ‘scary face’ on Facebook and drove 2500 miles to bring the dog home
Do you know what it feels like to look at a dog and know that they are part of your family? Even if you’re not really thinking about getting another dog? Of course, you do! So is Sherry Lankston of Seattle, Washington.
When she found out that adorable, misaligned dog Harvey was adopted at San Diego Department of Animal Services, she knew the young Husky with a unique grin that belonged to her family. And her heart is so sure, she brought her two sons and their dog, River, to make the 1,250-mile journey to meet him.
When do you know?
When they arrived, their first meeting was like a dream. Sherry wasn’t surprised that everything worked out for Harvey. When she first saw him on Facebook, she knew there was something special about him Today“I just saw his happy face with his tongue sticking out to the side, and I said to my husband, ‘That little trembling face speaks to my little heart, and I think that’s it. my dog.'”

The post introducing Sherry to Harvey was shared by Joy Ottinger, a lieutenant with the San Diego Department of Animal Services, because she wanted to help the good boy find his permanent home.
Joy told Today: “He was there for months and nobody cared about him. “I’ve heard people say he’s ugly or ‘Ew, look at him!'”
With his grin, intelligence and loving heart, Harvey was a “protected person” who had a rough start in life. Joy shared that Harvey was one of three Huskies rescued from the desert and his deformity could have been caused by a bite to the face when he was a puppy. Whatever happens to Harvey, his crooked snout doesn’t pose a problem. It just gives him the cutest grin that breaks Sherry’s heart.
Family road trip for love
But Harvey was so far away that the idea of adopting him seemed impossible. Still, Sherry couldn’t stop thinking about Harvey and even read the flights carefully.
“I was like, ‘Why not look? Let’s see if I (can) find a flight to San Diego.’ And everything is weird – even just consider it silly.
Joy and Sherry are working together to find a solution to get Harvey from San Diego to Seattle. But Sherry came up with an idea that made adopting Harvey a fun ride. Lankston made the trip over three days, camping along the way with River. And when the family went to see Harvey, Joy was there to witness the place and said, “It’s love at lightning!”
“It’s a big job taking on another dog, especially a rescue because you never know what you’re going to get. But we know,” Sherry said. “The first time we met I said, ‘Okay, it’s our dog.’”
During the family’s three-day trip home, Harvey learned that he loved Washington’s cool rainy weather and really enjoyed “splattering in puddles and being silly.”
Sherry hopes their story will inspire others, she explains: “He’s a great dog and I wish other people would hear the story and just say, ‘You know what, we Let’s go check out the shelter and maybe not ignore that skinny dog in the corner because the skinny dog in the corner can be their best friend.”
