BOVINA, Mississippi — Seven people were killed and dozens injured in Mississippi after a commercial bus overturned on Interstate 20 Saturday morning, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
Six passengers died at the scene and another died at a hospital, according to a press release. The bus was traveling westbound when it left the freeway near Bovina in Warren County and overturned. No other vehicles were involved.
The crash was caused by a tire failure, the National Transportation Safety Board said on the social media platform X. The bus was operated by Autobuses Regiomontanos. A woman who answered the phone at the Laredo, Texas, office said they were aware of the crash, but she would not answer questions or provide her name.
The transportation company says it has 20 years of experience providing cross-border trips between 100 destinations in Mexico and the United States. Its website advertises a “modern fleet of buses that are serviced daily” and offers “special fares for workers.”
The dead included a 6-year-old boy and his 16-year-old sister, who were identified by their mother, Warren County Detective Doug Huskey said. He said authorities are working to identify the other victims.
Thirty-seven passengers were taken to hospitals in Vicksburg and Jackson. The department is continuing to investigate and has not released the names of those who died. No other information was immediately available.
