Michael Savarino and Paolo Banchero, Duke basketball players, face DWI-related charges
Savarino’s mother, Debbie Savarino, is Krzyzewski’s eldest daughter and Duke’s assistant athletic director.
Savarino, 20, was towed Sunday at around 1 a.m. ET on suspicion of a stop sign violation, according to Knox. In his exchange with Savarino, the responder noted that he was showing signs of intoxication and allegedly illegally recorded 0.08 BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration), Knox said.
Savarino was released and his trial date has been set for December 9. Banchero’s court date is December 8.
Krzyzewski said in a statement, “We are looking into the legal matter regarding two members of the men’s basketball team. Any further action as a result of this situation will ultimately be decided by the Vice President/ Director of Athletics and University officials.”
Savarino played three games of his career at Duke, scoring just one point in seven minutes of combined play.
Banchero, a 19-year-old freshman, is the Blues’ top scorer, averaging 19.3 points per game.
Duke’s men’s basketball team, 3-0 and 7th, played Gardner-Webb (0-2) on Tuesday night. Panchero was in the starting lineup.
