MG plans ‘cars for everyone’ in Australia


MG is planning to launch a new model range in 2027 and will expand into new, higher price points… without abandoning existing segments.

“From MG 3 to Cyberster… each worth $10,000 I will put a model there [by 2027],” MG Motor Australia CEO Peter Ciao told Car expert.

“That means from 20 to 30, from 30 to 40, 40 to 50 and even 60 to 70, 70 to 80, 80 to 90 – all segments, I will launch a model for that. ”

But while MG is introducing its first car worth up to $100,000 – Cyberster – later this year, it still plans to offer affordable small and light cars as well as SUVs, which have been its mainstay since its Chinese ownership.

MG Motor Australia PR director David Giammetta said: “We are not turning our back on entry-level cars, we are growing as a brand and we will have a car for everyone. People”.

That includes the new generation of MG 3, HS And ZSscheduled for June, August and October this year.

The local MG range tops out at $59,990 drive-away MG 4 XPoweralthough the Cyberster will launch in the fourth quarter with a price tag between $100,000 and $150,000.

As for what MG has planned for other segments between now and 2027, we have some clues.

MG has previously said it may introduce vehicles to its lineup from SAIC Motor’s IM Motors brand, a more premium, electric-only brand founded in 2020.

In August 2023, Mr. Ciao told Car expert he is looking to bring about IM LS6 electric coupe SUV to Australia.

“I am still resolving this issue and negotiating with the factory, but I believe the MG brand has the ability to sell a variety of vehicles at many different prices, up to over 100,000 USD. I don’t think it’s a challenge,” Mr. Ciao said.

“In terms of MG luxury cars in Australia, I have three options, but my goal is to bring the luxury LS6 here first.”

The Tesla Model Y The rival has a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain with up to 379kW of power, with a range of more than 750km on the more generous CLTC drive cycle.

MG previously said the IM brand’s LS7 SUV and L7 sedan would also be available here, although this no longer appears to be the case.

The IM product line was also recently expanded to include car L6giving the brand a pair of sedans and a pair of SUVs.

The young brand is considered a potential competitor even by Porsche.

If IM models are sold as MG here, it wouldn’t be the first time the MG badge has been applied to a product from another SAIC Motor brand.

For example, the MG 5 wagon in Europe is the renamed Roewe Ei5, while the MG RX8 for the Mexican market is the Roewe RX8 and the RX9 for the Philippines is, you guessed it, the Roewe RX9.

Given that the next generation HS is set to be a redesigned Roewe RX5, this appears to open the door for other MG-badged Roewe models in markets such as ours.

In markets such as India and Thailand, the MG octagon was even applied to various LDV/Maxus models.
