Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 2025: Coupe spotted hints at return of V8 engine

Mercedes-AMG has once again been spotted testing a new high-performance coupe, possibly the CLE 63, this time wearing minimal camouflage.

Set to replace both existing Class C coupe and convertible and Class E coupe and convertible, new CLE This vehicle will be offered with both fixed and convertible tops.

A higher performance model will top the range, following the C63 AMG coupe.

What is the CLE 63 supposed to have? previously discovered There’s a charging port, indicating the presence of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder plug-in hybrid electric powertrain (PHEV) sourced from the C63.

However, signs of PHEV power are absent on the most recently spotted version, with no obvious charging port or hybrid sticker spotted on the prototype.

Mercedes-AMG is unlikely to switch back to V8 engines after being publicly criticised for its move to four-cylinder PHEVs.

Mercedes-Benz has firmly deny that the brand will return to eight-cylinder engines for its new performance models, although this latest batch of images further solidifies rumors that the CLE 63 will be sold with an upgraded version of the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that powered the C63 and C63 S until 2021.

The CLE53 The car is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine, creating an awkward situation if Mercedes-AMG were to produce its flagship model with fewer cylinders.

The current AMG C 63 uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 350kW and 545Nm of torque, combined with a 150kW/320Nm electric motor and 6.1kWh battery, total system output increases to 500kW and 1020Nm of torque.

These are significantly more power outputs than the previous-generation C63 V8, despite the PHEV weighing 392kg more.

Looking beyond the powertrain, the camouflage has been partially removed, making the differences between other CLE variants and this flagship model more obvious.

The front bumper is unique to this car and gives a wider feel than the CLE 53.

The square exhaust pipes are flush with the rear bumper, a design feature commonly found on other current AMG 63 models.

Like the CLK models of the late 1990s and 2000s, the CLE will combine the C-Class and E-Class two-door models under a single nameplate.

In 2017, Mercedes-Benz brought back the coupe and convertible versions of the E-Class, sold simultaneously with the C-Class coupe and convertible.
