Maxima BMW reflects on Morgan Park challenge ASBK
ASBK 2022 – Round 5 – Morgan Park
NextGen BMW ends their weekend
We knew that going into this round that we would be up against it. We tried to check out a couple of weeks before but unfortunately Glenn was only able to do one day and that day was almost over. Then, when Friday practice rained, we knew we were in trouble. We’ve basically completed 14 laps so far, at Morgan Park on the M 1000 RR, putting us at a huge disadvantage against most other competitors.
With the news that Josh Waters will not be participating in the ring, a big favor has been paid to a former NextGen Motorsports racer from 2016, and a close friend, two-time NZ supermoto champion Sloan Frost. Sloan, who hadn’t ridden a superbike in 2 years was at Morgan Park to support his young son Nixon in the Oceania Junior Cup races and accepted the offer without hesitation and he’s going in on Thursday. Seven with even less preparation than Glenn.
Both Riders worked hard all Saturday but the last few tenths skipped Glenn and thus Qualify P10 and Sloan P15. Big changes to the morning launch and we soon discovered we were going too far in one direction and also ruled out a tire selection.
Race 1 Seeing both riders use the Hardest Pirelli available, the team decided to be cautious as we simply didn’t have the time to test all the tire options and know that several other riders will fade as qualifying is one thing but racing is where the M1000rr shines. Glenn had a bad position in qualifying and went straight to 6th place, under pressure in all races he never gave up and even went faster than qualifying with the tire stiffest. When the race was over, a solid sixth place was his. Sloan had an impressive effort and made it through some regular games and finished in a fantastic 12th place.
Race 2 saw warmer conditions but the rear tire selection was still a gamble. We chose to play it safe and run on hard tyres, a choice that ultimately proved to be correct. While the start didn’t go well, Glenn fought from 10th place in a large group, all racing to finish in 7th place, missing 6th place by just 0.01. at the finish line. Sloan finished with another reliable result in 13th place and also set the fastest lap of the week.
We now have a long break before the championship resumes at Phillip Island and hopefully the weather will allow us to really test some to continue the challenge towards the top 3 in the championship. . Thank you to all of our sponsors and supporters, we will be back in November.
Shane Kinderis – Team Leader
“A tough weekend but also a positive one, the team and the drivers worked really hard throughout the weekend. The weather made it difficult but Glenn never gave up. The poor qualifying didn’t help but we all know this is not a one-round race and Glenn loves the challenge.
“Sloan impresses by not practicing on a track he hasn’t seen in years and on a bike he’s never ridden. It just goes to show how good the M1000rr is when it can be tailored to the rider in just a few sessions.
“A good spot and the first BMW home for the weekend. Now we have some time to rest and when the weather gets better let’s do some tests before round 6 at Philip Island. “
Glenn Allerton
“At the end of the week, we knew we were prepared for a battle. We have limited testing time, which is not ideal but my confidence is high after the Darwin round. Unfortunately, the rain on Friday left us short of time to prepare well on the bumpy Morgan Park surface.
“We hit it to our best, the chase setup in practice and qualifying P10 wasn’t what we needed but we kept working and slowly we made the bike. better bike.
“Finishing P6 on stage one and P7 on stage 2, got me 6th overall at the weekend and a good total for the weekend got me 6th in the championship.
“Really looking forward to personal favorite Phillip Island and Tailem Bend in November”. “
Sloan Frost
“I have a great relationship with Shane so when I heard Josh couldn’t go to Morgan Park, a thrown comment quickly regained momentum and before we knew it Motorcycling NZ and ASBK were pulling the strings. to get my entries sorted and it’s time to go in the right direction.
“I have great respect and trust in Shane. We had some great success together so I knew the bike would be top notch, my only concern was my fitness, haven’t competed in over 2 years and only 3 weeks after the surgery back. Those of us who’ve had the chance to see these works of art up close know that it’s an opportunity not to be missed, so don’t hesitate.
“The first time I sat on the bike, the bike felt light and there was plenty of room to stretch out, which is great when you’re 6.1 years old.” The heavy rain didn’t soothe me much.
“At first I found the car sturdy and very powerful. Obviously that setup is great for someone who’s used to cycling and is getting close to the achievement where I wasn’t there.
“Overnight, Shane was able to get my feed back, cross-referencing suspension data, brake pressure, throttle position, etc. to generate throttle, wheel and throttle maps. more suitable grip depending on my position on the track. The next morning the bike was a completely different animal, we basically put the bike down to a point where it was docile so I could focus on going fast and once I was confident, they I have the ability to start enhancing the backup settings in the electronics. .
“We made a few minor adjustments during qualifying and two races with a bit of preload, bar and tooth placement on the rear sprocket. My lap times continued to decrease each session but the grueling physical nature of the track and my conditioning were the only limiting factors.
“The sophistication of the BMW electronics and Shane’s ability to process and apply all that information are amazing. The bike, the team and the atmosphere are absolutely amazing on the weekend. Let’s just say that if I have a call back, I’ll be available. “
