Masters 2024 missed opportunity: Jordan Spieth, Viktor Hovland, Justin Thomas among stars not playing weekend

Big names like Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler find themselves top the rankings at Masters 2024 through two rounds, but not all of their peers were as lucky. The harsh weather conditions that enveloped Augusta National Golf Club wreaked havoc on the competition and some players had no answers.

The cut appeared to be set for most of the afternoon at 5 o’clock, but late mistakes answered the prayers of many and moved it to 6 o’clock when only a few groups remained on the golf course. Thanks to Hideki Matsuyama’s double on the 18th, players like Tom Kim and Rickie Fowler will now have weekend tee times.

Leading the group on the outside looking in is 2015 champion Jordan Spieth. The man who can seemingly do no wrong at Augusta National has done a lot this week, specifically in the form of his four first-round 9s. Restarting Friday morning’s opening round, Spieth trailed by 1 but did all his work (and then some) with countless errors on the par-5 15th.

Spieth went on to post a 7-over 79 in Round 1, adding a 2-over 74 in Round 2 for good measure. He never really got a chance to enjoy the weekend unlike many of his colleagues, including best friend Justin Thomas.

The two-time PGA Championship winner was in action for much of the second round. Thomas walked to the 15th tee for par for the tournament. His lie in the water resulted in a double bogey, but that was just the beginning of his troubles. That double was followed by another double on 16, a bogey on 17 and then another double on 18. He played the first 32 holes at even par but his final four holes that is 7 more, Officially absent on weekends.

Viktor Hovland had everything going well in Round 1 and played the first nine matches at 4 under. It looked like the Norwegian would be in contention at Augusta National again when he finally opened with a 71. In a red number to start the day, the reigning FedEx Cup champion was punched in the mouth immediately with a snowman at the par-5 2nd. He was never able to recover as Hovland turned 43 and began shooting a second-round 81.

Hovland would have been the highest-ranked player on the field to miss out if it weren’t for Wyndham Clark. The defending US Open champion struggled in his Masters debut and narrowly missed out on a birdie chance in his final round of the weekend. Instead, he’ll win rounds 73-78 and will pack his bags tonight.
