Interim manager Ralf Rangnick faces another challenging moment in his time in charge of Manchester United, as the Red Devils visit Villa Park ahead of powerhouse Aston Villa that could show acquisitions their new appreciation.

Manchester United (seventh, 31 points) aim for a minimum of fourth in the Premier League; a win could lift it to within a point of Arsenal, who currently occupy that spot. But Rangnick and United need more than just a win: a strong performance will go a long way in convincing the players and fans alike.

Not only did he help improve the team’s play, but he also recruited two starting players who could make his debut against United: playmaker Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona and left-back Lucas Digne from Everton.

It will be a close game between two quality teams – as Monday’s FA Cup third round tie proved. Man United won that match 1-0 at home, knocking Villa out of the competition and setting up an intriguing game. Aston Villa won their first match in September, a match that also ended 1-0.

He was active when he debuted. Man United could use a spell to take control of the game again. That’s all Villa right now.

49th minute: Another great save from David De Gea. Villa’s Jacob Ramsey made a quick run in the box and finished, but De Gea was in attendance today. Today there will be more work to do for him.

47th minute.: Emiliano Martinez’s big stop in an Anthony Elanga outburst. The youngster has been active in his first Premier League appearance for the 2021-22 season.

46th minute: CAUTION – Bruno Fernandes is shown a yellow card for a late challenge on Villa’s Morgan Sanson.

46th minute: We are in progress. Kortney Hause came on for Ezri Konsa, who picked up an injury late in the first half. Hause scored the winning goal at Old Trafford in the match back in September.

Half 1: Aston Villa 0, Man United 1

Half time: Man United wanted a convincing performance in this game and they won it in about 30 minutes of the first half. It didn’t matter that Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez gifted the Reds their goal – the lead was well deserved. But then Aston Villa played strong late in the half and a few saves from David De Gea gave the home team the lead.

Villa will continue to pour in the second half and there will certainly be plenty of buzz at Villa Park with the expected debut of star midfielder Philippe Coutinho. We will see how Man United reacts in the face of adversity and the pressure that is sure to come.

43rd minute .: Villa test De Gea again! Lucas Digne fired a shot towards goal after Ings’ cross, but De Gea moved well to save it. Man United is gradually losing this game.

36th minute: Chances for the Villa! Buendia with a quick corner kick towards the goal, but De Gea’s reflex was excellent. Villa are increasing the pressure here to end the first half.

33rd minute: That is the last. Man United went the other way and Greenwood had another shot that Emi Martinez had to save. Anthony Elanga could not recover. Good game to watch for neutrals.

32nd minute: In a swift transition, Villa had the first shot of the game as Ollie Watkins tested David De Gea, but it wasn’t a difficult endeavor to block.

31st minute: Now it’s Man United’s Nemanja Matic’s turn to receive a yellow card for a foul on Danny Ings. But it was a good foul, 45 yards from goal and it prevented the build-up. Nothing comes from a free kick. Man United are defending comfortably.

27th minute.: Lucas Digne received his first yellow card as a Villa player for a foul on Diogo Dalot. Man United was scored by Greenwood after that goal. Another view for the visitors.

23rd minute: Anthony Elanga came down in the box, but the referee and VAR said it was a fair challenge in the box.

19th minute: Another good move from United. Alex Telles with a cross from the left missed Cavani and the ball went to Mason Greenwood, who was blocked by Emi Martinez and went wide of his touchline. Cavani was in pain and tried to shake it off.

12th minute: Active Anthony Elanga, who made an unexpected start on the left wing for Man United. He dashed past Villa right-back Matty Cash to catch a ball in the box, but the header was wide of target.

6th minute: Man United scores! And what a silly one by Villa’s Emiliano Martinez! Bruno Fernandes shot on goal, it went through the goalkeeper’s hand and through his feet. He’ll want that back.

5th minute: Manchester United started well. The visitors are playing in the last position of Villa and they have won a few corners and a few pieces thanks to the positive. There is a confidence in the way United are hitting the ball.
