Los Alamitos Releases Winter Stakes Schedule


Five stakes worth a combined $700,000 highlight the 2023 Winter Thoroughbred meet at Los Alamitos Race Course.

The six-day season will begin Friday, Dec. 8, and continue through Sunday, Dec. 17. Racing will be conducted Friday-Sunday both weeks (Dec. 8-10 and Dec. 15-17). Post time will be 12:30 p.m. PT.

The first of the stakes races is the $200,000 guaranteed Starlet Stakes (G2) for 2-year-old fillies. The race at 1 1/16 miles will be run Dec. 9. The 2022 Starlet Stakes was won by Michael Lund Petersen’s Faiza , who went on to win multiple graded stakes this year, including the Santa Anita Oaks (G2).

One week later Los Alamitos will run the $200,000 guaranteed Los Alamitos Futurity (G2). The Dec. 16 race for 2-year-olds also will be run at 1 1/16 miles. Leslie and Pierre Amestoy and Roger Beasley’s Practical Move  won the 2022 Futurity and went on to win this year’s Santa Anita Derby (G1).

The winter schedule includes a pair of races at one mile for 2-year-olds that are bred or sired in California: the $100,000 guaranteed Soviet Problem Stakes for fillies will be run Dec. 10, while the King Glorious Stakes for colts and geldings will be contested Dec. 17.

The other stakes is the $100,000 Bayakoa Stakes (G3) for fillies and mares that are 3-year-olds & up. The Dec. 15 race will be run at 1 1/16 miles.
