Linux Foundation seeks collaborators for new interoperable open standard

A consortium including Microsoft, Rockwell Automation, Siemens and other organizations under the Joint Development Fund, part of the Linux Foundation, is inviting colleagues to join the Margo initiative and contribute to building a standard for effective interoperability to accelerate digital transformation.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

San Francisco-based Zededa, an edge computing company serving multiple industries, is the most recent company to join the open standards effort for interoperability.

From the Latin word for edge, Margo seeks to scale data exchange across multi-vendor environments by freeing barriers to innovation.

The company, which leverages open source EVE from LF Edge in its edge orchestration platform, said it joined a steering committee to help develop the standard and provide a compliance testing toolkit in an announcement in September. before.

EVE-OS, an open operating system based on Linux, is the platform for distributed edge deployments on any hardware, any application, and in the cloud. It provides remote control of edge devices and more, providing a wide range of capabilities – including automatic patching for security updates.

“This type of open collaboration represents an important milestone in realizing the full potential of technologies such as [artificial intelligence]machine learning and advanced analytics at the edge,” Ouissal, the company’s CEO and founder, said in the statement.

BIGGER TREND

Darren Lacey, chief information security officer at Johns Hopkins, said he is interested in how the use of open source tools and the development of memory-safe languages can help improve the cybersecurity posture of medical system.

I said Healthcare IT news in April that the foundational technologies that underpin the healthcare IT infrastructure are critical to healthcare information and that security leaders should be thinking about them as they manage network security manager.

“You would be hard-pressed to find any complex application that doesn’t have dozens, even hundreds, of open source dependencies – from Linux to Apache to Kubernetes,” Lacey said.

“More generally, memory safety represents one of a series of low-level technical considerations for evaluating and securing technology. Our attention to the ingredients of the stew is as important as the Stewed food.”

ON PROFILE

“The idea is that users should be free to create the best solution for their needs without constraints, costs or delays,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation. It is not necessary to demonstrate the spirit of open source cooperation.”

“Microsoft is committed to aligning our adaptive cloud strategic architecture, such as Azure Arc and Azure IoT Operations, with the Margo initiative to help our customers build, deploy, and open scale their applications faster, while running both at the edge or in the cloud,” said Christoph Berlin, general manager of Microsoft Azure, in Margo’s announcement.
