Learner driver pushes Corolla to the limit, police fine him a large sum


Humble person Toyota Corolla has a reputation for absolute reliability, and one learner driver in New South Wales was apparently willing to put it to the test before being fined by authorities last month.

August 16, Goulburn Road Patrol Officers spotted a 1990 Toyota Corolla travelling at 138km/h in a 110km/h zone on Remembrance Drive, Wollogorang.

After stopping, the driver produced a New South Wales learner permit – which requires the holder not to exceed 90km/h, even if the posted speed limit is higher – while no L plates were attached to the Corolla.

Police also found that the car was not roadworthy, with multiple holes in the air intake and radiator, causing the Toyota to overheat.

The learner was fined $2959 and given six points for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, as well as being fined $320 and two points for not wearing L plates, and $320 for using a non-compliant light vehicle.

Their licenses were also confiscated and suspended for six months.

Meanwhile, the fully licensed supervising passenger was fined $136 for failing to supervise driving and failing to prevent a traffic violation, for a total of $272.
