Kia Sorento PHEV 2025 price increases, plug-in system is cleaner

Upgraded Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) has finally been priced for Australia, up to $84,660 before on road costs.

Up about $3,500, the 2025 Kia Sorento GT-Line PHEV AWD is still about $11,000 more expensive than the Sorento GT-Line HEV AWD.

This follows a similar price increase applied to the remaining upgraded Sorento models, due to launch in 2024 (MY24).

For MY25, the Sorento range doesn’t see any changes to pricing or specifications, however the PHEV has been certified to the newer Euro 6e emissions standard.

In contrast, the remaining vehicle lines all meet Euro 5 standards.

Car expert It is understood that the Sorento PHEV was Euro 6d compliant before the facelift, but the changes to the 6e standard mean the new plug-in must use 95 RON premium unleaded petrol (compared to 91 RON previously) and the braked towing capacity drops from 1350kg to 1010kg.

When asked about the rollout of additional Euro 6-compliant powertrains across the Kia range, Kia Australia general manager of product, Roland Rivero, said “the ongoing rollout will align with the timing of the ADR rollout” and the upcoming New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES).

Supply of electric Sorentos to the Australian market remains limited, previously set at around 20 units per month for the hybrid (HEV) version and 10 units per month for the PHEV version.

“HEV supply is still limited for the Sorento and Carnival,” said Mr. Rivero. “While the Sportage is better because it is European-made in Slovakia.”

“NVES is well understood by HQ and together we will take the necessary steps under NVES to minimize liabilities/penalties.”

The Sorento Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine combined with an electric motor, lithium-ion battery pack, six-speed automatic transmission and on-demand all-wheel drive.

The petrol engine produces 132kW (5500rpm) and 265Nm (1500-4500rpm) of torque, while the gearbox-mounted electric motor produces 67kW (2100-3300rpm) and 304Nm (0-2100rpm), giving a system output of 195kW and 350Nm.

Under the second row of seats is a 14kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack that can be charged via a single-phase AC charger (up to 3.3kW) and weighs 140kg. It takes 3 hours and 25 minutes to charge from 15 to 95 percent at this rate via a Type 2 port.

Kia claims an all-electric range of up to 68km (NEDC), combined fuel consumption of just 1.6L/100km and CO2 emissions of 36g/km.

By comparison, the Sorento 2.2D AWD uses 6.1L/100km and emits 159g/km. All versions of the Sorento have a 67-litre fuel tank.

While full specifications have yet to be announced, the Sorento GT-Line PHEV AWD will almost certainly be based on the spec sheet of the current GT-Line HEV AWD.
