Kia jumps to third place on Australian sales charts for the year

An October of strong sales growth saw Kia overtake Mitsubishi on the annual sales chart, and rise to third place overall after two months of running.

Fast-growing Kia has sold 66,580 vehicles here through the end of October, up 14.5%. Behind Mazda (79,669) and Mitsubishi (66,505), Kia’s major shareholders are Hyundai (63,392) and Ford (53,298).

Ten years ago, Kia’s market share in Australia was 2.6%, while it is now 7.4% – almost three times its slice of the pie during that time.

The Korean brand ranked second in passenger car sales (28,492 units compared to the beginning of the year), just behind Toyota (31,278). It also ranks 5th in the SUV market with sales of 38,088 units, behind Toyota, Mazda, Mitsubishi and Hyundai.

Impressive enough Kia is the only leading brand that doesn’t have any light commercial vehicles in its range – meaning it only competes at 70% of the total market. If it finds a way to get its hands on a uterus like thiswatch out for Mazda…

Kia’s best-selling this year is the new Sportage midsize SUV (15,497), ahead of the small Cerato (11,558 units). This is followed by the Seltos (7803) and Stonic (7582) compact SUVs.

Kia also ranks first in several model segments including Micro Cars, where its Picanto has a staggering 77.5% market share. Picantos buyers, often P-platers, are great customers because you can build brand loyalty with them over time.

Kia also leads the passenger car market with Carnival dominating, capturing 72.9% market share as competition dries up. At a lower displacement level, Kia Stinger (2054) dominates the Large Car segment < $70 thousand with 76.4% market share.
