KEEP Foundation Launches Gateway Education Program
The Kentucky Equine Education Project (KEEP) has launched the Gateway Education Program, a job opportunity for Fayette County high school students.
This program allows students the opportunity to observe professionals in the equine industry and experience a day in the life of that activity, gaining real-life insights into careers, career paths, education and skills needed for a career in the equine industry.
For the 2022-2023 school year, the KEEP Foundation partnered with the Locust Trace Agricultural Science Center and Fayette County Public Schools’ Experiential Career Education program. After this year, the goal is to expand the program to surrounding counties and eventually the entire state.
Students with little or no equine experience will attend an instruction session at the Kentucky Equine Reception Center, where they will participate in an introductory-level equine curriculum before commencing the equine(s) their job position. Students with equine experience go straight to their jobs.
Participating businesses include; Jockey Club, KESMARC, Kentucky Horse Adoption Center, Kentucky Horse Park, Machmer Hall Sales, Clerk Center, Spy Coast Ranch, Stonestreet Ranch, and Triple Chimney Ranch.
Alexandra Harper, Executive Director of the KEEP Foundation, said: “This is a great opportunity for students to gain first-hand experience in exploring the multitude of careers in the equine industry. “Our industry relies heavily on the next generation of riders and women, and we hope this program will help address and mitigate future workforce issues in the industry. “
