Jussie Smollett Wants New Hate Crime Trial
Jussie Smollett wants a new Chicago trial or a not guilty verdict after he was found guilty of falsely reporting a hate crime against himself in 2019.
In documents obtained by NBC News, his attorneys allege the court made “many trial errors leading up to and during the trial.”
Smollett’s defense team also said the evidence presented by prosecutors during the trial was “insufficient and inconsistent to the extent that there is no reasonable reason to conclude Mr. reason and therefore there is evidence that the jury’s verdict is contrary to the shown weight of the evidence.”

“Therefore, Defendant now respectfully requests that his sentence be vacated or that the Court grant Defendant a new trial instead,” the filing said.
Following the guilty verdict, his attorney Nenye Uche told reporters Smollett was “100 percent innocent,” and the group was confident “he will be cleared of all, all charges of any crime.” The verdict is inconsistent,” he said. “You can’t say Jussie lied and say Jussie didn’t lie for the exact same incident.”
