Johnny Podres looks to continue his win at Daytona
A field of 10, led by the top four finishers from last month’s Siren Lure Stakes—Johnny Podres , Peace first , Lane road And Mucho Del Oro —entered in the $100,000 Daytona Stakes (G3T) on May 26 at Santa Anita Park.
Reflecting the competitive nature of the race, the 6 1/2-length race down the hillside turf course was billed as the 10th and final race on Sunday—a position typically reserved for a close field that gives runners bet the chance to receive rewarding exceptional rewards at the end of the day. The race follows the five-horse Santa Margarita Stakes (G2).
Johnny Podres and First Peace were separated by half a length when they met in the April 21 Siren Lure. Johnny Podres was the best to win by half a length in the rally guided by Geovanni Franco.
Victory that is Grazen The gelding’s third consecutive start, all under Franco’s direction. Trainer Librado Barocio trains the 7-year-old filly for owners David Bernsen and Mia Familia Racing Stable.
Trainer Mark Glatt fielded a pair of runners at Daytona in Sterling Racing’s comeback Whatmakessammyrun and First Peace, who ran for owner Rancho Temescal, Red Baron’s Barn and Rodney Orr. The second, a 4-year-old gray or wanderer’s son happy , won the 2023 John Shear Stakes over the same course and distance. He is 2-2-0 in four starts at the distance.
The field includes three or four miles found against easier company than they will face May 27 in the $400,000 Shoemaker Mile (G1T) at Santa Anita.
