Jermell Charlo: “Canelo, when I’m 158, I’ll teach him a great boxing lesson like Floyd Mayweather did”

Adds Jermell Charlo’s name to the long list of pugilistic fighters eager to take on boxing’s biggest star, Canelo Alvarez.
“I wish I could be the one to fight Canelo,” Charlo said in a recent interview with Brian Custer on The Last Stand Podcast.
Although Charlo has made his name in the mix, along with his twin brother and current WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo, former two-time super middleweight champion David Benavidez, multi-division champion Demetrius Andrade, and countless others – Charlo is placing most of his focus on his 154-pound division.
The current unified middleweight player is eagerly awaiting the opportunity to fight WBO belt holder Brian Castano. The two are expected to face off in an immediate rematch on May 14, with the winner crowned as the division’s first undisputed champion since Winky Wright in 2007. The two initially went head-to-head in July 2021, fighting a draw that decided the controversial division. .
Beyond the history that was written in his mind, Charlo knew well and very well that a confrontation with Alvarez was highly unlikely. With the Mexican star competing in the 175-pound weight class in his next ring appearance with Dmitry Bivol, Alvarez will have to lose a significant amount of weight to take on Charlo.
However, if Alvarez decides to placate Charlo and include him in his fight offer, the Houstonian heavyweight won’t be asking Alvarez to drop all the way down to the 154-pound junior middleweight limit. Instead, Charlo is willing to meet him somewhere in between.
“Canelo, come 158, I could easily get 158.”
Officially, Alvarez hasn’t competed under 160 pounds since scoring a stoppage-time winner against Liam Smith in 2016. Alvarez’s 154-pound run was a resounding success. At one point, he held the WBC, WBA and WBO junior middleweight belts.
Of course, in the aforementioned run, Alvarez suffered the first and only loss of his career to Floyd Mayweather in 2013 in the 152-pound weight class. Alvarez was completely defeated during their 12th round chess match as 36-year-old Mayweather lifted his record to 45-0.
Although Alvarez has improved rapidly since then, Charlo believes that if he is given the chance, the match against Alvarez will be a great one for the Mexican star.
