After two consecutive losses to the US and Canada, Mexico is hoping the regional World Cup qualifying campaign gets back on track at Kingston when El Tri meets Jamaica in the third straight line test.
Mexico is in third place in the CONCACAF qualifying (14 points), but they still have a lot of work to do to win one of three direct tickets to the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup. And El Tri will have a spot against Reggae Boyz’s desperate team, who need a home win to revive their own World Cup dreams.
The Jamaicans tested Mexico at Estadio Azteca in their first head-to-head last September and came close to a draw, conceding Mexico in the last minute. But this time Reggae Boyz has a full squad, including West Ham star striker Michail Antonio and a number of other English-born players.

Pressure is mounting on Mexico and coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino, and if they fail to secure a win in Jamaica they will face a tense atmosphere for the next two games at the Estadio Azteca against Costa. Rica and Panama, the two teams will present their own challenges.

72nd minute: SUBS – Henry Martin, Tecatito Corona and Gerardo Arteaga replace Funes Mori, Uriel Antuna and Jesus Gallardo. Meanwhile, Jamaica put Michail Antonio and Andre Gray in for him.
67th minute: Mexico conceded a free kick just outside the box thanks to Diego Lainez – it was just outside the box – and Alexis Vega’s free kick went wide of the box. More subscribers will come for Mexico.
60th minute: It was all Mexican since Jamaica’s goal, but the passes and movements weren’t as sharp as they were in the first half.
56th minute: Tata Martino couldn’t believe what Uriel Antuna had just missed. Every opportunity is huge.
53rd minute: SUB – Mexico brought in Diego Lainez for Andres Guardado. Tata Martino wasted no time. He knows how this can happen.
50th minute: Too much for an easy inning for Mexico. Jamaica’s Score! Rogelio Funes Mori made a poor save from a Jamaica corner and Daniel Johnson scored the goal.
46th minute: The second half is underway and this is expected to be a comfortable half for Mexico. Jamaica took down one man, but Reggae Boyz was barely threatening when they had 11 men in all.

47th and above.: Red card! The referee was blown by VAR Allen Chapman and Damion Lowe was sent off. Jamaica will play the rest of the match against 10 men. Tata Martino had words for Lowe on his way off the pitch.
44th minute.: Damion Lowe fully collided with Andres Guardado and riveted his ankle after clearing the ball. It will be interesting to see what the referee decides here.
43rd minute .: Michail Antonio saw inside the box, but his shot was blocked by Hector Moreno, who moved over to cover. The West Ham striker has space to turn and shoot. It’s a great defensive game.
36th minute: Andres Guardado hit the ball great and it went straight into the Jamaican box, but goalkeeper Andre Blake will be in tonight’s game and catch the ball before Funes Mori can.
29th minute: OH. Jamaica walked away with one. Javain Brown just dashed behind Rogelio Funes Mori in the box. There’s Video Replay in this game (CONCACAF is set up in time for the last six), but VAR doesn’t seem to be a glaring and obvious error on that failed call.
26th minute: Jamaica has the game’s first chance on a fixed piece. Lamar Walker won the ball in the set, and Daniel Johnson crossed the ball from the left, but no one got the ball and Mexico cleared the danger.
21st minute: There were no crowds, you could hear Jamaican captain Andre Blake talking to his Jamaican teammates. “You have to run more.” Meanwhile, a corner from Mexico led to Hector Herrera widening to the left of the goal. He was open. Jamaica can’t get a foothold in this game.
17th minute: Another Mexican shot! Alexis Vega with a volley and Blake with a fly save for a corner. Nothing comes of it. Jamaica is on the rise.
16th minute: The first shot on goal for Mexico and it was Charly Rodriguez with the shot and Andre Blake saved. Blake is begging his teammates to be stricter. The protection by Reggae Boyz is very lax.
11th minute: It’s all Mexican. Jesus Gallardo on the left and Chaka Rodriguez on the right are crossing the end of the field. El Tri is knocking it off at will. It didn’t help Jamaica that Michail Antonio wasn’t tracking Chaka on his flank.
5th minute: SUB – Mexico’s right-back Jorge Sanchez has to leave the field. Something happened to his left knee. Luis ‘Chaka’ Rodriguez enters. Another player started as a substitute for Mexico.
4th minute: Strong Mexican start. El Tri is dribbling and coordinating very well. Jamaica is dropping the ball immediately. The home team could not hold on.
First minute: The match has started. Jamaicans in all bright yellow suits and Mexicans in black jerseys.
7:01 pm: Singing time. About to start. It would be an odd atmosphere with no fans allowed at the National Stadium in Kingston due to government COVID-19 restrictions.
5:38 pm: It looks like Mexico will be without another star with central midfielder Edson Alvarez absent due to a calf problem. Tata Martino doesn’t want to take any chances with his two home games at the upcoming Estadio Azteca.
Jamaica lineup vs. Mexico
While Jamaica will have a stronger team than they last met, Tata Martino will be absent from the three main starters for the match: midfielders Cesar Montes (COVID-19), Hirving “Chucky” Lozano (suspended) and Raul Jimenez (calf trauma) are both confirmed. Midfielder Edson Alvarez is on the bench because a calf problem has kept him out.
Veteran Hector Moreno, winger Uriel Antuna, central striker Rogelio Funes Mori and Hector Herrera are the replacements for the absentees. Alexis Vega was also started before Tecatito Corona.

New Jamaica coach Paul Hall, who was a member of the Reggae Boyz team that played in the 1998 World Cup, will coach his first World Cup qualifier after replacing former coach Theodore Whitmore. In his first game in charge – a 0-3 loss to Peru in Lima on January 20 – he used a 4-3-3 with a test formation. It was a similar formation to the one against Mexico with Michail Antonio starting at the top.
