The official shortlist of UK cities hoping to host next year’s Eurovision Song Contest has been revealed.
The cities likely to host Eurovision 2023 are: Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield.
The news was shared Friday morning on Radio 2 by Scott Mills on Zoe Ball’s breakfast show. Twenty cities initially bid to participate.
The Cities bid to participate were evaluated based on various criteria, including having a venue that can hold at least 10,000 people and entrance to an international airport.
It was a two-stage selection process – we now have a shortlist of cities that will be reevaluated, looking at things like the availability of resources and the experience of hosting events. great.
Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra won this year’s competition
Although the BBC and the European Broadcasting Union will make the final decision on the host city, the government can also be consulted on the decision.
Ukraine won this year’s competition, with Kalush Orchestra takes first place with their Stephania song. It has since become a national anthem in the country as fighting against Russia continues.
The UK takes second place, with Sam Ryder’s Space Man.
Last month, EBU ruled the event could not be held in Ukraine next year because the risk of Russian air strikes and mass casualties is too high.
The BBC will broadcast the competition on behalf of Ukraine’s national broadcaster, UA:PBC.
The UK holds the record for hosting the event, with next year marking the ninth time it has been hosted here.
It has previously been held at Brighton Dome, Wembley Arena, Harrogate’s international hub and most recently in 1998 at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham.
And four of them as guest hosts – hosting the event despite not having won the previous year.

Eurovision is the world’s largest live music event – the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest has reached over 180 million global audiences across television and digital platforms.
Ukraine is expected to play a large part in bringing the show together, and the hosts and entertainment will be Ukrainian.
UK charity British Future has offered Ukrainian refugees and their UK host families priority tickets to the event, to celebrate welcoming efforts from those in the UK. UK and throughout Europe, who have dedicated their homes to those in need.
As the winner, Ukraine will automatically be in the final next year, along with what are known as the “big five” (UK, France, Italy, Spain and Germany), who all contributed the most financially to the event.

There will also be questions about the multimillion-dollar funding and where that money comes from, amid worries about the cost of living crisis, the BBC’s cuts and whether Ukraine can contribute.
It is yet to be confirmed how to get tickets or the price – all will be decided once the host city is selected.
The host city is expected to be announced in the fall. The contest is usually held in May, and the date will be announced later.
