IPL Media Rights (TV and Digital) for 2023-2027 transferred to two separate broadcasters, transaction is pegged at Rs 44,075 Crore: Source

Media rights to the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) for the next five-year cycle from 2023 to 2027 have been fiercely disputed by some of the country’s top sports broadcasters. After intense bidding, TV and Digital rights were won separately by two broadcasters, NDTV has learned from sources.

According to sources, the price of package A (television license) and B (digital license) has been pegged at a fairly high Rs 44,075 crore. This puts the value of every IPL match, at a cost above Rs 100 crore, something unprecedented in Indian sport. According to sources, the current price per IPL match is Rs 107.5 crore.

Sources have confirmed that the deal totals 410 matches over a five-year period. The TV rights were sold for Rs 23,575 crore, while the digital rights went for a whopping 20,500 crore.

Package C of IPL media rights, which features non-exclusive digital rights to 18 games including the opening match, final, three playoffs and a couple of weekend double titles, has hit the Rs 1700 crore mark , according to sources.

The NDTV source said on Friday, the global retail giant Amazon has withdrawn from the race to auction media rights in the Indian Premier League.

Star India surpassed Sony Pictures to secure the media rights of the Indian Premier League for the 2017-2022 cycle with a bid of Rs 16,347.50 in September 2017. With this deal, the cost of an IPL match was around Rs 55.

In 2008, Sony Pictures Network won the IPL media rights for 10 years with a bid of Rs 8200 crore. IPL’s global digital rights for a period of three years were awarded to Novi Digital in 2015 for 302.2 crore.

The league has been expanded from eight teams to ten this year with the Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants being included from the 2022 season. The Gujarat Titans went on to win the league in its first season last month.
