The massive artificial intelligence models built by companies like OpenAI will eventually become commoditized, with the next wave of value in the technology coming from applications built on top of the models, said co-founder and chairman of Information told CNBC on Tuesday.
Large language models are AI models trained on large amounts of data, and they power applications like ChatGPT. Companies like OpenAI and Metadata is one of the largest companies in this field.
There will be different LLM programs around the world, says Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of Infosys.
“There are a lot of companies now building India-specific LLM solutions for Indian languages… so I think what will happen is that because AI ultimately depends on the data it’s trained on, every place in the world that has its own data will be required to do something to train models on that data,” Nilekani told CNBC’s “Squaw Box Europe” on Tuesday.
“Eventually, the models will become more common and the value will move to the application layer and the entire stack.”
Applications can be built on top of LLM, and according to Nilekani, the next wave of value from AI will come from those applications and other related technologies.
Infosys is one of India’s largest technology companies providing software outsourcing and consulting services.
Discussing AI trends, Nilekani said integrating AI into businesses, also known as enterprise AI, “is a longer cycle than consumer AI.”
“Consumer AI, you can create a chatbot and it starts working. Enterprise AI requires companies to innovate internally. So it’s a longer road, but it’s definitely a huge thing that’s happening right now,” Nilekani said.
