Indonesia opens electric bicycle battery factory in Banten

In a push to move towards electric motorcycles and net zero emissions, Malaysia’s ASEAN neighbor Indonesia has opened another electric vehicle (EV) battery factory in Tangerang, Banten province. Inaugurated by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, “the battery factory is one of our milestones, after three years, to develop the electric motorcycle program in Indonesia,” said Senda Hurmuzan Kanam, director of planning and infrastructure development for new renewable energy and energy conservation.

Located on the island of West Java, the factory belongs to PT TDL Energy Indonesia (TDL ID), which has received significant investment from PT Battery Technology Indonesia (TWS Indonesia). The TDL ID factory is the first such facility in Indonesia to achieve 20% local content (TKDN) in its first year of operation.

“The factory becomes the first factory to achieve such a high TKDN score and we expect the factory’s TKDN to increase to 27 percent next year,” Kanam said in Antara’s report. Kanam also expressed hope that the investment in the factory will help develop Indonesia’s EV ecosystem.

“We are preparing the groundwork to make Indonesia an exemplary country in Asia and globally in achieving net zero emissions,” said TDL ID CEO Jack Kim. Kim added that the plant is aiming to help make Indonesia a reference point for Asian countries and the global community in achieving net zero emissions
