Image: Storm leaves destruction across Houston

A strong storm ripped through through Texas on Thursday nightkilling at least four people and devastating the state with destructive winds and heavy rains.

The force of the storm caused widespread damage in Houston, blowing out windows from ground-floor stores and high-rise buildings downtown. It toppled trees, toppled power lines and even tore through a wall at a downtown nightclub, leaving behind piles of bricks.

Nearly a million utility customers remained without power Friday morning, and officials said the storm brought winds of up to 100 miles per hour. With some roads still blocked, officials warned people to stay home as they assessed damage and cleared debris.

Here’s a look at the damage in Houston from the storm.

At least two people were killed by falling trees, officials said, and firefighters responded to reports of a gas leak and downed power lines, including one on a major highway. Officials said Friday that it could take up to 48 hours to fully restore power across the region.

Houston schools were out of class on Friday. Video circulated online shows rain pouring through the closed roof of Minute Maid Park as the Houston Astros face the Oakland Athletics.

People took shelter in homes, cars and nearby buildings as the storm passed through the city.

As officials continued to repair damage Friday morning, downtown streets were littered with shards of glass and other debris.
