Hyundai Ioniq 5, top Kia EV6 in 300-mile EPA range, beats all rivals but Model Y in efficiency

At least in theory, that means these new models aren’t constrained by some of the drawbacks that can hinder the design, encapsulation, and sometimes efficiency of models adapted from the ground up. internal combustion block. With ratings released on Monday, Ioniq 5 and EV6 just got their first, first indication of where they stand above that performance point — and specifically on the range.

The good news is that in both cases, of their longest rear-wheel drive long-range versions, the Ioniq 5 and EV6 both have a 300-mile range.

Weird 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 earns an EPA range rating of 303 miles in that combination, while switching to the dual-engine and all-wheel drive versions drops the range rating to 256 miles.

So far, Hyundai has only said that it will offer the Ioniq 5’s biggest package, at 77.4 kwh. But with a smaller 58 kWh battery and rear-wheel drive, the Ioniq 5 can cover a respectable 220 miles.

It achieves an EPA-rated 310-mile range in rear-wheel drive long-range form, with the same 77.4 kWh battery pack. In all-wheel drive long-distance form, it’s rated at 274 miles. With the smaller 58 kwh battery, in single-motor form, it goes 232 miles.

Efficiency for EV6 models comes in at 105 MPGe (3.1 mph) for all-wheel drive and 117 MPGe (3.4 mi/kwh) for both single-engined models. As for the Ioniq 5, it ranges from 98 MPGe (2.9 mi/kwh) for the large battery, dual-motor model all the way up to 114 MPGe (3.3 mi/kwh) for the large-battery, single-motor version. Note that the range is calculated using a different method than efficiency.

While it’s better than the Ford Mustang Mach-E, none of the models measure up to efficiency like the Hyundai Kona Electric, which is full-sized but achieves 120 MPGe (almost 3.7 mi/kwh) – or equals the Tesla Model Y., which is the same size and style as both of these low-rise crossovers. In Long Range form, the Model Y is rated at 326 miles and has a combined efficiency rating of 125 MPGe, or 3.7 mi/kwh.

The first deliveries of the Ioniq 5 are due later this year. Meanwhile, the EV6 won’t arrive early next year. While it’s unusual to see the entire lineup of vehicles appear in EPA ratings potentially months before they reach dealerships, the paperwork for it could have been filed at the same time as the Ioniq 5, as the publicity parent companies of Hyundai and Kia have done many times before when there is a high degree of disparity between models.
