How to choose the right travel camera

As photographers, we often have a lot of different horses for different courses, and when it comes to traveling it can often be difficult to choose the right one to take with you. If you are struggling with this dilemma, you are not alone. Photographer and YouTuber Omar Gonzalez is right there with you.

It’s good to have options, and Gonzalez looks at the pros and cons of carrying a large DSLR with you (in this case, his Nikon D700) versus smaller options like Fujifilm X-T3 or the X-T20 camera, finally settled Sony a7Cif you watch to the end of his video to see his photos, seems like a great choice.

During the mirrorless stone age, I often struggled between the Micro four-thirds half-nine or the disastrous efforts from Canon and Nikon, such as the EOS M or the Nikon series. 1 (how things changed with the R and Z lines). Then, in later years, I convinced myself that a 1-inch sensor was fine and the output Canon PowerShot G9 X or the G3X with a monstrous 600mm equivalent zoom if I’m really feeling adventurous.

Among the options Gonzalez looks at here, between Google Pixel smartphones, GoPro and various DSLR cameras and lenses, there’s another affordable option these days and one that’s going through a rough patch. a little renaissance with the new Olympus OM-1 and Panasonic Lumix GH6: Four thirds micro.

It was when I held the Panasonic Lumix GM1 from 2013, a camera about the same size as the G9 X (about a deck of cards), that I realized the reasonable point between sensor size, image quality and image quality. photography and mobility. Combined with Panasonic’s ultra-small but powerful 12-32mm kit lens included with the camera, it makes for a smaller sensor compact that’s completely out of place. It allowed me to travel around London and take excellent photos at a cousin’s wedding with ease. I wouldn’t be able to do this easily with a point-and-shoot compact camera or my phone:

The GM1 is a bit long in the tooth, but similar small size options exist in Micro Four Thirds packing some of the more modern technology. The Olympus E-M10 is an exceptionally great, compact travel camera with excellent image quality.

So while Gonzalez uses Sony’s full frame model, there’s a lot to choose between it and a mobile phone. What are your options for a travel camera? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
