The Paris Olympics are in full swing with nearly 7,000 athletes from 206 teams competing for bronze, silver and of course gold medals.
As of 8:30 a.m. ET Monday, 30 teams had won at least one medal, but the only team to reach double digits was Team USA with 12 medals. They were followed by teams representing China and France, tied with nine medals each; Japan with eight medals; South Korea with seven medals; and Australia, Great Britain and Italy with six medals each.
While the United States may have the most medals so far, gold medals are a different story. China has five gold medals — two more than the United States — putting the country in the top spot. Official Olympic Medal ListJapan, South Korea and Australia also ranked above the United States with four gold medals each.
Leading up to the Olympics, analytics firm Notes page predicts that Team USA will win the most medals. Gracenote predicts that Team USA could also win the most gold medals, and the biggest threat to that will be athletes from China.
Currently, no country officially “wins” the Olympics, but winning the most medals or the most gold medals is still a symbol of victory for participating countries.
