Honda Malaysia hits 1 million production milestone – Civic RS is the landmark model of Melaka factory


Today, March 30, 2022, will forever be etched in Honda Malaysia’s history as the company has reached the milestone of one million units produced at the Melaka plant. The car marking the rolling out of HM’s Pegoh factory is red Civic RS, the newest model locally assembled CKD in Malaysia.

HM started local assembly in Pegoh near Alor Gajah in 2003 and today’s milestone comes just 20 years later. In March 2021, HM hit the one million mark sold – today’s 1 million mark is for Melaka-assembled vehicles.

“The domestic HM has been established for 20 years. We have grown and recorded significant achievements since then. In March 2021, we achieved millionth sales unit milestone to all Malaysians. Just one year later, I am now celebrating another milestone with all of you, the millionth production unit,” said Madoka Chujo, MD and CEO of HM.

“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all Honda associates and suppliers for their hard work and dedication to ensure smooth production and supply chain operations as soon as possible. even in the face of many challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic, global chip shortages, and recent flooding. HM opened Line 1 at Pegoh factory in January 2003. Built on an area of ​​more than 46,000 m2, the production capacity is 50,000 units per year. The first car to ship from Pegoh was the second-generation CR-V. In October 2013, HM launched the Jazz Hybrid on Line 2, officially opened in January 2014. With the second line, the total capacity reaches 100,000 units per year.

HM says it has invested in a range of state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies in Pegoh. on par with Honda factories in Japan. The application of “Laser Brazing”, which creates a smooth and clean roofline for a sleeker bodywork, is considered one of these technologies, along with Inner Frame Welding and Polyurethane Foaming.

Notably, all HM models are made in Melaka, except CBU Odyssey MPV. CKD models are City, City Hatchback, Civic, Accord, BR-V, HR-V and CR-V.

Another achievement for Honda is that it has held the No. 1 spot for non-state passenger vehicles in Malaysia for 8 consecutive years since 2014, and The H brand spent most of its time overtaking Toyota in the overall non-national market, although it does not manufacture commercial vehicles such as pickup trucks and vans. It’s an anomaly in the global scheme of things, which shows the strength of the brand in Malaysia.

At the ceremony to mark the milestone, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali of Melaka, Chujo said that it would be her last appearance as CEO of HM. The company’s new director will be announced soon.
