HIMSSCast: Towards a Safer and More Secure Use of AI

The overlapping demands of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity are becoming increasingly important as the two fields become increasingly intertwined in exciting and challenging ways in healthcare.

For example, AI is increasingly deployed as a critical frontline tool for risk detection and incident response, even as bad actors are also using machine learning and genAI techniques to carry out increasingly creative and aggressive exploits — a double-edged sword that will continue to sharpen as both good and bad actors innovate how they use AI.

AI and cybersecurity are two very different fields, but they increasingly have more in common, and the value of risk management has never been more important to both.

The upcoming HIMSS Healthcare Cybersecurity Forum is scheduled for October 31 and November 1 in Washington, DC. The forum will feature two days of discussions on everything from cyber resilience for the supply chain to change management after M&A.

In a presentation, HIMSS Senior Principal of Cybersecurity and Privacy Lee Kim will talk about the intersection of information security and AI – specifically, how AI can be applied to information security to ensure the safe and responsible use of algorithms in vendor settings. We spoke with her recently to discuss this and other topics.
