The last Chevrolet Camaro left the factory at the end of 2023, putting the vaunted muscle car nameplate on hold. But General Motors president Mark Reuss wants to see the Camaro return as an electric vehicle, according to Motorcycle trends.
GM will take a different approach from rival Ford, which has applied the Mustang name to the Mach-E electric crossover sold alongside traditional gasoline coupes and convertibles. According to Motor Trend, Reuss’s ideal electric Camaro would be a car, not a crossover. The Chevy Blazer EVHowever, arguably the brand’s current rival to the Mach-E, has arrived with plenty of cues inherited from the Camaro.

However, unlike every Camaro produced to date, any future electric version will have four doors. Sports cars and convertibles built on a skateboarding EV platform that’s in short supply due to all the packaging hurdles, and two-door car sales don’t exactly justify lavish engineering solutions. However, that still leaves room for a four-door coupe similar to the current BMW i4.
Instead of aiming for the biggest horsepower numbers and quickest acceleration, Reuss also wanted a Camaro EV that returned to the nameplate’s roots, emphasizing simplicity and affordability. Reuss told Motor Trend that the base price of the Camaro EV could be comparable to the $34,995 starting price of the Chevy Equinox EV crossover.

With one Chevy Bolt EV is coming soon, plus the Equinox EV, GM will have a number of affordable electric vehicles — probably both starting under $40,000. If a Camaro-inspired model were also available in that price range, as a car it could spin the performance car’s image in the right direction.
While an affordable Camaro EV appears to be something Reuss wants to do rather than something firmly in GM’s product plans, the automaker has been hinting for several years that it intends to produce lower-profile electric vehicles based on its Ultium components — perhaps with cylindrical batteries, it plans to cooperate with Samsung.
