General principles to consider when treating chronic disease

Dr. David Minkoff is a pioneer in the field of naturopathic medicine with active practice in Clearwater, Florida. In this interview, we dive into some of his best strategies for optimizing your health and addressing common health challenges that conventional medicine is incapable of addressing.

Like me, he is passionate about exercise and has been an avid athlete since he was young. So far, he has participated in 43 Iron Man competitions and will do another in September 2022.

“Most of my training is with people with chronic illnesses, but I have worked with some very tall athletes and I can really help them because I understand what kind of metabolism you need to do. to be able to operate stably at high level,” he says. “I was in the lab and that was very helpful.”

Minkoff’s Journey

Minkoff has had a fairly eclectic medical training, covering both adult and pediatric infectious disease. In 1995, his wife, a registered nurse, took him to a series of lectures by Jeffrey Bland, a pioneer in nutritional biochemistry, and the rest, it is said, is history. .

“My lights just came on,” Minkoff said. “It was like, ‘Smoking saint, this guy is smart, and it makes sense, and I want to learn this.’ So I started taking courses. I went to ACAM [American College for Advancement in Medicine] and learn to chelate iron. “

He then trained with Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, a biologic dentist and specialist in Lyme disease; Dr. Yoshiaki Omura, general practitioner, cardiologist and president of the International College of Acupuncture and Electrotherapy; and Dr. Thomas Rau, a Swiss physician specializing in biological medicine.

“When I started this, I just looked for the best people I could find to help me learn how I could do this better,” Minkoff said. “It’s been 25 years. So I left the emergency room in 2002, and we’ve been busting the gang ever since.

We’re having a huge workout right now, and it’s great fun because there are so many new ways to help people get stronger that really work things out with their bodies.

… If you have a chronic illness – high blood pressure, high cholesterol, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s disease – it’s not so good to use standard medication. They can help you treat the symptoms, which should be fine for a while, but you’re getting to the end point, which isn’t going to be what you want.

We have seven super rooms. We have been doing that for many years. It’s a great treatment… We’ve been doing methylene blue for about five years… Then I learned about NAD through the nose – it was fascinating. The field is bursting with amazing people who are finding things that work for everyone and there are practically no downsides. “

Two main root causes

Chronic disease is often caused by some underlying cellular dysfunction, and two of the main reasons for it are toxicity and/or poor gut health. Minkoff explains:

“Half of the problem is that the things in the body shouldn’t be, and the other half is the things that aren’t in the body that should be there. In some cases, there are mechanical things.

We need chiropractors, acupuncturists, massage therapists or things like this because their joints are misaligned or their cervical vertebrae are misaligned. Sometimes they may even need surgical intervention.

But the two biggest problems are, you’re toxic and you’re exhausted. My approach to people then is: What are those things, and then, what is the priority or order of dealing with those things? ”

When it comes to detox, many things can go wrong, so it needs to be done under the supervision of a skilled practitioner. For example, the use of DMPS can greatly affect your kidneys, and if your body is not able to get rid of the toxins, releasing them from the tissues where they are trapped can make you sick. so worse is better.


When Minkoff sees a new patient, he asks them to fill out a detailed and extensive medical history, including a dental history. He then performed a detailed physical exam, followed by an automated response test, which allowed him to identify various triggers, such as toxins and infections.

“The body is so complex that it tells you, ‘This is my priority. Make the canals first. Handle gaps. Oh, yes, there is a parasite there. There’s autoimmunity there. I had a chronic infection with Epstein Barr virus or herpes type 6,’” Minkoff explained.

Automated response testing will also identify specific pathogens that are causing problems. In the interview, Minkoff gave several examples of patients whose health problems were resolved after the specific causative agent was identified and treated.

Often, an infected root canal is found to be the primary cause. Minkoff has a biologic dentist nearby. If a dental problem is suspected, he sends the patient there for a three-dimensional cone-beam CT scan, which can clearly identify any problem areas that cannot be seen using a beam. Two-way X. Another really useful diagnostic method is dark-field blood analysis (aka live cell microscopy), which Minkoff learned to use under Rau.

“I find that very helpful because sick people have bad blood” he says. “They have regular health checks, good reflexes, auscultation of the heart, liver and kidneys. [but they feel terrible] … We threw blood on it and looked at it and we were like, ‘Holy smoke.’ There’s biofilm everywhere, there’s fibrin deposition, and there’s organisms…

Two months later, ‘Hey, look at this blood. This blood looks better. ‘ And two months later, ‘This blood actually looks normal’… That’s the big picture where we’re restoring this person’s physiology to a healthy one, and that’s health. “

Treatment modalities available

When it comes to treatment, Minkoff has a number of interesting modalities at his disposal, including therapeutics, ozone therapy, prolozone (a combination of prolotherapy and ozone), hyperbarics, chelation, UVBI (blood irradiation), by ultraviolet light), EBOO (extracorporeal blood oxygenation), optical modulation and more.

Minkoff also offers VSEL [very small embryonic like] stem cell treatment, and it also has a powerful effect. Minkoff uses it himself and claims to gain 7 pounds of body mass with no change during VSEL training. He was trained in the use of VSEL by Dr. Todd Ovokaitys in San Diego.

Dr. Frank Shallenberger is the doctor who trained him in ozone management. Interestingly, Minkoff and I are both scheduled to speak during Shallenberger’s 2022 ozone certification course at the Peppermill Resort and Casino in Denver, Colorado.

Benefits of Complementary Oxygen and Ozone (EBOO) Therapy

EBOO is the newest and most effective way to manage ozone. It’s even 10 times more effective than ozone, but most people have to start slowly and work their way up. I became interested in this treatment last year and encouraged Tom Lowe to make the devices commercially available in the United States. Minkoff explains:

“EBOO is a way to deliver oxygen and ozone to the body in a mechanism similar to blood filtration. An IV goes into an arm, it goes through a machine that has a pump, so it can pull blood out of the body. It passes through a system where the blood is exposed to very high concentrations of oxygen and low concentrations of ozone, where it is then recycled back into the body.

Some newer machines also expose blood to ultraviolet light. In about an hour, blood circulates through this machine and is highly oxygenated. It’s not really filtered like dialysis, but it’s exposed to this high concentration of oxygen.

And – I don’t understand exactly how it happens – but there’s a container of running water that if you’re really sick and toxic, you’ll get a lot of this runoff collected in this container. Sometimes it is foamy and yellow. Our record is 2,000 CC of this bubbling liquid in a really sick person…”

Sauna therapy is another excellent intervention with powerful therapeutic benefits. We didn’t have a chance to delve into sauna therapy, but I will have a detailed and in-depth look at saunas next week, providing specific recommendations on how to identify and/or build one of the best saunas in the world. These are one of my favorite therapies and I believe most can benefit from them, so stay tuned for this important article.

How to increase NAD naturally

If you can’t afford intravenous NAD treatment or can’t afford it, there are three ways to raise your NAD levels naturally: calorie restriction (or time-restricted eating, achieve the same). self, but safer), aggressive exercise and sauna therapy.

If you do those three things, you will activate NAMPT, the forerunner of NAD. You can then use low-dose niacinamide (not niacin). The ideal dose is about 50 mg, three times a day. This will give you the raw materials your body needs to produce NAMPT. I did a great interview with molecular biologist Nichola Conlon earlier this year which you can find on my Substack.

“I put a lot of people with mitochondrial problems in [niacinamide]and I find that helpful,” Minkoff said. Niacinamide is also extremely cost effective. It will bring you around 25 cents a month, while other NAD precursors like NMN can cost you $100 a month or more.

Plasmalogen and Iron Test

Minkoff also used a lipid test developed by lipid biochemist Dayan Goodenowe, author of “Breaking Alzheimer’s Disease.” “I learned a lot from him, and we put his test on everyone,” Minkoff said.

“Now he has a lab that can measure plasmalogens levels. They are very integral pieces of the cell membrane, and he has some very good data on people with APOE4 being monitored for dementia.”

Patients with low plasmalogen levels may be offered supplements such as fossil lipids to prevent further deterioration in their neurological function. Minkoff also measured ferritin and iron binding on all patients, and if their hemoglobin was high, he would prescribe blood donations to reduce their iron stores. Stored iron is incredibly destructive, as it causes oxidative stress and is an often overlooked factor in health decline.

Basic health guide

While getting enough exercise is the way to go if you have a chronic health problem, three basic recommendations that can improve your health include:

Clean up your diet – Focus on completely organic foods and avoid any and all processed foods, including restaurant food. Minkoff typically starts patients off with some combination of an autoimmune, palo, or keto diet.

This means no grains or dairy (butter also works), beans or vegetables nitrate. Usually, most intestinal problems resolve in about six weeks and energy improves when eating a diet of meat, fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. (Carbohydrates from fruit will be based on their metabolic health.)

Optimize your sleep – Sleep trackers can be very helpful to ensure you get a good night’s sleep.

Exercise regularly – While cardio is important, strength training should be a priority, especially as you age, as having muscle mass prolongs your life and reduces your risk insulin resistance and diabetes.
