Geely EX5 – Proton eMas 7 twin gets new name for global market; European launch on September 10

Who would have thought that the name EX5 would be used for both Honda utility symbol coffee and Geely’s latest high-tech electric car? Neither do we, but here we are – Geely Galaxy E5developed together with Proton eMas 7 (stylized as e.MAS 7) will be known as the Geely EX5 for global markets.

The SUV was launched in China last month and will make its overseas debut in Frankfurt on September 10. There are no details yet on pricing, specifications, equipment or even a market launch date, with Geely only promising to deliver a vehicle with “comfortable driving, long range and eye-catching appearance”.

However, the upcoming launch of the EX5 in the German city suggests that it will be aimed at European markets. That hasn’t always been the case with Geely’s overseas car launches, though – Geometry Afor example, is revealed in Singapore in 2019 but not yet sold there.

The EX5 is expected to be offered with the same powertrain and battery options as the Galaxy E5, featuring a single front motor producing 218 PS (160 kW) and 320 Nm of torque. This helps the car accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds.

There are two versions of the Aegis short-blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery available in China – the 49.52 kWh version has a CLTC range of 440 km, while the 60.22 kWh is said to be good for up to 530 km. Expect much shorter range figures on the much more realistic WLTP cycle when used in Europe.

The EX5 will also get the Galaxy E5’s tech, including a 10.2-inch digital display, a head-up display, and a 15.4-inch infotainment touchscreen. The latter runs on the Flyme Auto operating system, which was developed jointly with Meizu – a smartphone maker. owned by Geely chairman Li Shufu. The company’s self-developed 16-speaker Flyme Audio sound system will also be available, fully equipped with headrest speakers for the driver.

While the EX5 is expected to hit the European market, it may not be offered in the UK and other right-hand drive countries. That’s because it has been reported by Car that Proton is returning to major RHD export markets, with the eMas 7 likely to be the spearhead – although Ash Sutcliffe, Geely’s head of public relations since deny this.
