Fujifilm announces X-H2S hybrid mirrorless camera

At it X-Summit . Event in Omiya, Japan, yesterday (May 31), Fujifilm announced the newest (and most expensive) addition to its line of APS-C mirrorless cameras, X-H2S. X-H1 successor, announced in 2018is a premium product aimed at “hybrid” shooters built around a stable 26-megapixel stacked sensor – “fast read” —CMOS sensor.

Combined with the new X-Processor 5, the sensor enables screen lossless continuous shooting up to 40 fps with electronic shutter AF tracking and up to 15 fps burst shooting with autofocus tracking via mechanical shutter. There’s also a very good buffer of up to 184 JPEGs or 175 RAW images at full speed with the electronic shutter, and over 1,000 JPEG files or 400 RAW files at top speed with its mechanical shutter. Subject-detection AF allows the camera to detect the faces and eyes of people, animals, birds, planes, trains, cars, and motorcycles.

In terms of video, the X-H2S can shoot 6.2K/30p, 4K/120p, and 1080/240p — all in 10-bit 4:2:2. However, while the camera can record 4K footage /60p is oversampled from the full sensor width of 6.2K / 30p, then 4K / 120p has to crop 1.29x. 4K/120p can be output via HDMI 2.1 as ProRes RAW or Blackmagic RAW to an external recorder. For internal recording, there is a new CFexpress Type B main card slot as well as a second SDXC UHS-II slot. The new F-Log2 video profile enables up to 14 stops of dynamic range. According to Fujifilm, 4K/60p video can be shot for about four hours straight without overheating.

Rounding out the package is a magnesium alloy body, weatherproof, OLED display on the top, 5.76M-dot OLED viewfinder (runs at up to 120fps), 1.62M LCD- dot fully articulating dot, full-size HDMI port, USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) port, microphone socket and headphone socket.

Available on the market from the beginning of July, the X-H2S will have a suggested price of $2,500. For those who shoot underwater, it should be noted that while Fujifilm’s XT series has been fairly well-supported (up to and including X-T4), housing manufacturers are less enthusiastic about the X-H1. Nauticam, for example, was one of the few people who noticed it, but its housing was later discontinued, presumably due to lack of interest from buyers.

The most advanced X Series mirrorless camera available today, the X-H2S includes advanced features for both stills and video capture. It is also the first APS-C digital camera of its kind to feature Fujifilm’s 26.16MP X-TransTM CMOS 5 HS image sensor, a back-illuminated image sensor stacked with signal reading speed is four times faster than Fujifilm’s previous X. -TransTM CMOS 4*first.

X-TransTM CMOS 5, combined with the newly minted X-Processor 5 (which doubles the camera’s processing power compared to X-Processor 4), greatly enhances overall image fidelity at lower ISO and reduce noise at higher ISOs. Subject detection AF, maximizing tracking speed and accuracy of moving subjects is now possible through the combination of the AI processor.

For video, the X-Processor 5 enables 10-bit 4:2:2 video recording at resolutions up to 6.2K/30P and frame rates as fast as 4K/120P and FHD/240p. Support for professional codecs, such as Apple ProRes HQ / Pro Res 422 / Pro Res LT, provides incredible flexibility in post-production, while minimizing power consumption, thus extending lead times The camera’s maximum video recording time is up to 240 minutes.

“The common reaction to the X-H2S is ‘This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for!’ Mr. Victor Ha, Vice President, Optical and Imaging Electronics Division, FUJIFILM North America, said: Corporation. “It’s nice to see so many people enthusiastic about this camera, especially because of the features it usually doesn’t have at the $2499.95 price point.”

With these sensor and processor updates, the X-H2S achieves significant performance improvements over other digital camera models on the market, including:

  • Substantial enhancement to burst mode capabilities: The X-H2S can apply AF/AE tracking under power-free continuous shooting up to 40 fps*2and can produce over 1,000 continuous frames with high-speed burst mode set to 30 fps (JPEG) or 20 fps (RAW) *3
  • Significantly improved autofocus (AF) performance: The X-H2S’s high number of AF calculations per second improves overall AF accuracy and facilitates subject detection AF. Developed with Deep Learning technology, Subject Detection AF deploys an advanced prediction algorithm to enhance the performance of Zone AF, by fine-tuning the camera’s ability to track moving subjects in the environment low contrast. Object detection and tracking has also expanded from human faces and eyes to now include animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, planes, and trains. The X-H2S always focuses on targeted subjects, allowing users to focus on framing and key imaging opportunities.
  • Outstanding video performance: The X-H2S digital camera supports 4:2:2 internal recording, 10-bit Apple ProRes HQ / ProRes 422 / ProRes LT, and ProRes 422 Proxy at up to 6.2K resolution / 30P and 4:2:2, 10-bit h.265 video with frame rates as fast as 4K / 120P and FHD / 240p. The sensor’s 1/180-second readout when recording video further aids in minimizing rolling shutter effects on moving subjects or when the camera itself is moving. The heatsink design delivers up to approximately 240 minutes of 4K/60P continuous video recording, while the optional FAN-001 cooling fan accessory helps maintain the same level of performance under high temperatures.
