Formula 1 will not race in Russia

After Russia’s extensive invasion of Ukraine and growing criticism, Formula 1 announced that, at least for now, it will not hold Russia 2022 grand opening. We say “now” because of this part of the organization’s official statement:

“On Thursday evening, Recipe firstthe FIAand the teams discussed the position of our sport, and concluded, including the views of all stakeholders, that it is not possible to hold the Russian Grand Prix under the current circumstances. “

That seems to leave open the possibility that a Russian Grand Prix could happen if the situation in Ukraine changes.

Formula 1’s withdrawal from Russia is the latest criticism from around the world over the country’s decision to attack Ukraine. Before withdrawal, four times F1 champion Sebastian Vettel says he won’t race in Russia. Last year’s champion, Max Verstappen, also voiced criticism of Russia and said that the series shouldn’t go there this year. Haas F1 team, sponsored by Russia-based Uralkali, removed the company’s trademark and any Russian-related stickers on their cars. One of the team’s drivers, Nikita Mazepin, is the son of the person in charge of Uralchem, Uralkali’s parent company. Mazepin will still be driving for Haas at the time of writing.
