Ford recalls 18 F-150 Lightnings over concerns about battery fires

Ford has found the problem that led to the battery pack catching fire on the electric pickup truck F-150 Lightning 2023.

On Friday, Ford spokeswoman Emma Bergg told Green Car Reports that the automaker will recall 18 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning and replace their high voltage battery packs.

Bergg confirmed the Lightning electric truck itself will not be replaced, even if requested by the customer. Only the high voltage battery pack will be replaced. Resellers will install new packages as they become available in stock.

Customers will be notified as soon as possible. not like Summon Chevy Bolt EVFord will not advise owners to stop driving F-150 Lightnings, park outside, or limit battery charging.

Bergg explained by email: “Vehicles have passed pre-shipment quality checks and connected vehicle data shows nothing out of the ordinary.

A free loaner vehicle will be offered to customers but it probably won’t be the F-150 Lightning. Bergg could not comment on whether the lenders are F-150s as dealers operate independently.

F-150 Lightning is discontinued in February when a truck caught fire outside while undergoing pre-delivery quality checks. The order to stop construction and stop the train has been issued. The main cause of the fire was determined to be a battery manufacturing defect. According to Bergg, packages that could include suspicious cells were generated over a four-week period by the end of 2022.

Ford would not comment on how many trucks were produced with packages with questionable cells by the end of 2022, only noting that 18 trucks manufactured during that time went to dealers and customers. row.

Ford is not aware of any reports of accidents, fires or injuries related to this recall.

After Ford and battery supplier SK On confirmed the root cause of the problem, technical and spare parts charges were made when the new packages were manufactured, but Ford would not elaborate on what these might be. change or detail why the fire occurred.

Production of the F-150 Lightning will begin again on March 13, this allowed SK On to promptly build the updated battery cells into arrays and packs before sending them onto the production line.
