Ford Maverick and Escape hybrid recalled for engine failure

Ford is recalling 125,322 newer hybrid and plug-in hybrid models due to the risk of an engine failure that could cause an engine fire. Extended recall affects Ford Escape 2020-2023 and 2022-2023 Ford Maverick models, as well as 2021-2023 Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring models, equipped with a 2.5-liter inline-four as part of a hybrid powertrain, with or without a plug. Based on document recovery as announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the engines of affected vehicles may fail and engine oil or fuel vapors may accumulate near ignition sources, may cause a fire. Ford warns drivers to listen for loud and unusual engine noises, such as metal against metal. There may also be smoke or a significant reduction in engine torque. If any of these happen, Ford advises drivers to park safely and turn off the engine as quickly as possible.

Ford estimates that only 1% of the recalled vehicles have this type of engine failure, but acknowledged three additional cases of smoke or fire under the vehicle in addition to the 23 previously reported global cases.

Ford has also introduced the use of airborne remedies for recall with its Mach-E EV—although it looks like this fix will involve a physical fix.

Under the initial 2022 recall, owners are advised to take the vehicle to a dealer’s service center, where technicians drill additional holes in the under-engine shield and modify the main grille shutters. motion. A new remedy is in development, but Ford doesn’t expect it to be ready until the third quarter of 2023.

This recall has nothing to do with the electric propulsion system in these hybrid vehicles—unlike small recall F-150 Lightnings earlier this year due to battery problems. That was fixed by the vendor and Production starts again in March.
