The 37 mpg hybrid version of the Ford Maverick 2024 is no longer the cheapest in the lineup. The non-hybrid turbo-4 is now the base engine.
According to Ford, the Maverick XL 2024 starts at $24,995, including a $1,595 destination charge, while the Maverick Hybrid XL starts at $26,495. That’s actually a $1,500 surcharge for the Maverick Hybrid over the turbo-4.
It adds up to $5,005 over Maverick hybrid 2022 price when it was introduced—or 23% higher than two models a year ago. But until anyone else enters the market, Ford offers the only quasi-compact truck in the US.

As automakers scale up production of hybrid technology, it becomes cheaper to produce, while the mileage it allows becomes an easy operating cost for buyers.
That is the argument of Toyota, which has gradually made hybrid powertrains standard on many models such as the Sienna minivan, Venza crossover and Crown sedan. Toyota has managed to offer several different hybrids with 40 mpg or more and AWD for under $30,000.
And that seems to be where Ford is headed with some of its models, such as the Mexican-made Ford Maverick compact pickup truck, which also debuted two years ago with a hybrid version as standard.
But these combined economies of scale are unlikely to happen at Ford in the same way. Maverick hybrid production is very limited in the 2022 model year, with Ford cites global semiconductor shortage. But at the time, Ford gave many indications that it planned to expand its offering of hybrid versions later on. Reports also indicate that Ford misjudged interest in the Maverick hybrid and simply did not plan for that level of demand.

For 2024, Ford again says it will produce as much as it can to meet demand, but between the lines the company hasn’t made any bold moves to clear up the mess. its hybrid production — and they no longer say they will. to get any better.
“Battery capacity constraints for hybrid vehicles continue to be a challenge,” said Dawn McKenzie, a Ford spokesman. “This new supply strategy will help us better manage customer orders and accommodate all programs using this engine (Maverick, Escape, Kuga).”
Ford declined to comment on whether this would have any effect on the release of a new model Bronco hybrid sportsomething the company has suggested in the past is a possibility.

As before, the 2024 Ford Maverick is expected to achieve an EPA rating of 42 mpg in the city, 33 on the highway, 37 combined. That thing tops all other petrol pickups in efficiency. The non-hybrid Mavericks hit 23 mpg city, 30 highway, 26 combined with front-wheel drive or 22/29/25 mpg with AWD.
With a combined 191 horsepower from a hybrid system that combines a 2.5-liter inline-four and a 94-kw electric motor, the Maverick hybrid isn’t fast. But it can carry a quarter ton payload and can tow up to a ton—a lot for a few jet skis, a small camping trailer, or all of your gardening needs.
The Maverick hybrid is always front-wheel drive. If you want all-wheel drive, it only comes with the 2.0-liter turbo-4 making 250 horsepower and mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
At 199.7 inches long and 68.7 inches tall, the Maverick isn’t nearly as small as the Rangers of a generation or two ago, but it’s small enough to fit easily into most garages where the F-150’s Ford and even some Rangers will be challenged.

The Maverick is also offered in the mid-range XLT, priced at $27,910 for the non-hybrid or $29,410 for the hybrid, and now includes a modular bed sheet. A top-spec Lariat starts at $35,730 for the hybrid or $36,450 for the non-hybrid (including AWD), and it has a standard active safety kit that includes a blind-spot monitor, adaptive cruise control and rear parking sensor. .
