Let’s start by looking at booking directly with United Airlines. You can book a one-way, nonstop flight on December 31 between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG). Your seat will be in United Polaris business class and cost 80,000 MileagePlus miles and $5.60 in taxes and fees.

UNITED AIRLINES

Based on TPG August 2024 valuationUnited MileagePlus miles are worth 1.35 cents each, making this redemption worth $1,080. When you consider that the cash price for a business class seat on this flight is $3,033, this is definitely a bargain.

AIR CANADA

If you want to spend your Air Canada Aeroplan points on this deal, we found a seat available on the same United flight on December 31; the price is 60,000 Aeroplan points and $78 CAD (about $57) in taxes and fees. TPG values Aeroplan points at 1.5 cents a point, giving a redemption value of $900 (or $957 when you factor in taxes and fees).

Obviously booking through Air Canada instead of United will be a better value, but the miles you earn may be limited depending on where you earn your miles.

Your best bet is to look for which Star Alliance airline offers the best redemption value and points transfer from a program like American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou Rewards, Capital One or Marriott Bonvoy HotelIn the example above, you would get much better value transferring miles to Air Canada than United.

Maximize your purchases

If you book this deal directly with United, you can enjoy benefits like free checked baggage and lounge access as a United cardholder:

  • United℠ Explorer Card: 2 miles per dollar spent on United purchases, plus the first checked bag is free for the cardholder and accompanying person, plus two United Club passes once a year, plus more.
