This is your preview of the car Ferrari will campaign for the overall win in 24 hours Le Mans next year. The team in Modena hasn’t fought overall in France in 50 years, with 312 PB in second. The Italians haven’t won since 1965 with 250 LM, a streak of six consecutive wins that ended in Ford GT40 next year. We don’t have a name for this new prancing horse yet, but the racer was in development for 18 months, before Ferrari announced that it would join the Hypercar class of FIA World Endurance Championship. Head of the company’s competitive GT department, Antonella Coletta, told Autocar, “our dream is to win.” Of course.
All we can see about the tease now are a few blade-thin DRLs connected by illuminated red accents and a deep spoiler that slants down at the edges. This face glimpse looks like the Daytona SP3, itself a limited edition mid-engined sports car like the 330 P3 and 412 P that have run on the track the car is named after.
Ferrari said it chose the LMH class because of the more liberal regulations. Instead of the required specification components in the IMSA class LMDh will compete with supercarLMH allows manufacturers to develop brand displays such as frames and mixture systems based on road cars or as part of wholesale prototypes. Ferrari went the prototype route and barely had any raids into the parts bin. The class also requires participants to produce at least 20 road versions of the race car, with Coletta saying that “LMH is a good place to start parts for future road cars”. Whatever we finally see of design-wise on the hypercar will be on the road car design also.
The race car test will exit the sim and start on the track “in the coming weeks.” A competitive debut is scheduled for next March, sounds like Sebring for us.
In 2023, the same year Ferrari celebrates its 50th anniversary as a challenger in general, Le Mans celebrates its 100th edition. To recap what we’re looking at right now, the Le Mans Hypercar class will include Ferrari, PeugeotScuderia Cameron Glickenhaus and Toyotawhile the LMDh class will include Acuraalpine, BMW car, Cadillac, Lamborghini and Porsche. Ferrari says it has “an appointment with history” next year. We say anyone interested in endurance racing needs to book a hotel in the French countryside for June 10-11, 2023. It’s going to be crazy.
