FBI Investigating ‘What Appears to Be an Attempted Assassination’ of Trump in Florida, Suspect in Custody

Secret Service agents opened fire near the former president Donald Trumpgolf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, after seeing a man with a gun on Sunday afternoon, according to a report from the AP based on two law enforcement officials. The FBI said Trump was the subject of “an apparent assassination attempt.” The Republican presidential nominee is safe.

“There are gunshots fired near me,” Trump said in an email alert sent Sunday afternoon. “But before the rumors start spreading out of control, I want you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND HEALTHY! Nothing can slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER!”

The suspect fled in an SUV and was later apprehended by local law enforcement about 45 miles north of Trump’s golf course, according to the AP. “An AK-style firearm was recovered at the scene near Trump’s golf course, one of the officials and a third law enforcement official said.”

“President Trump is safe after gunshots were fired near him. No further details are available at this time,” a Trump campaign spokesperson said. Steven Truong said in a statement.

The White House said the President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been briefed on the situation and will be updated on the investigation, adding that “they are relieved to know that he is safe”.

Sunday’s events come two months after an attempted assassination of Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump’s security detail has been beefed up since then.
