EV, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions return in redesigned model

Kia has provided a first look at a redesigned second-generation Niro, along with a nod that the sustainability-focused crossover will again be offered in plug-in, hybrid versions. in hybrid and fully electric starting next year.

The company hasn’t provided any updates on these US-limited models — or even how the Niro’s dimensions, powertrain, or platform have changed. However, it did provide some information and plenty of pictures about the design, plus a few features coming to this model soon.

For the plug-in hybrid version of the Niro, Kia will offer a Greenzone Driving Mode, which allows the Niro PHEV to automatically switch from hybrid to pure EV mode when passing through schools or hospitals, or in the ” designated green area” — including users — is specified.

It says that Niro will “attract the complex needs of sustainability-conscious consumers”. That sounds like a somewhat more economical version of what it’s aiming for with the current first-generation Niro, which debuted in 2017. As Kia’s focus on efficiency and sustainability, The current Nio is built on an eco-focused platform shared with the Hyundai Ioniq Series.

While the Niro’s hybrid version was offered in all 50 states, the limited availability of both plug-in versions in 12 states made it a niche vehicle in those respects. — a factor that makes keep it from being GCR’s best car to buy in 2020. Kia confirmed coming soon EV6 power crossover for all 50 states.

Hyundai has yet to say whether companion Ioniq models will return after 2022, but the Ioniq Electric has been discontinued after the 2021 model year.

Kia has given the Niro a new look at the front, spearheaded by its latest “tiger face” theme, which brings slim, horizontal details to the headlights and air vents — perfectly making the Niro a thing. looks a bit wider even though the size of the new Niro has changed (we’re not sure yet). Kia only took the Habaniro concept from 2019, as an inspiration for the new Niro’s exterior design, which includes a two-tone look and wide rear pillars, which Kia says enhance aerodynamics, flowing in boomerang-shaped rear taillights.

We also think that both of those choices establish a bit more design continuity with the brand’s boxy compact sedan, the Soul, which Kia currently says won’t be returning as a Soul EV.

Inside, Kia says it fits commit to more recycled materials and focus on sustainability in future products. Niro features a header made of recycled wallpaper, a seat made from a product derived from eucalyptus leaves, and a paint for the doorways that have a lower impact on the environment.

There’s mood lighting all around, and the dash’s own aesthetic has been described as “mellow, but irregular,” with the design of the doors matching into an arc that rises above the gauges and display. Kia seems to have emphasized the glossy black surfaces — and, unfortunately, the touch surfaces — but it has kept the metallic markings to a minimum. This time around, hybrid and plug-in hybrid models seem to go with rotary knobs instead of levers.

Kia plans to introduce 11 electric vehicles by 2025, as part of the Plan B shove. Earlier this year, it introduced designs for seven dedicated EVs to launch in 2027, so the Niro EV could be one of those EVs that continue to share its platform with the internal combustion models? While Kia hasn’t explicitly said that, it should be relevant — so wait a few months for more details.
