Drunk driver accused of ‘causing disaster’ while fleeing police released on meager $500 bail

A woman in Detroit Metropolitan allegedly caused quite a stir last week when she crashed into several parked cars, hit a police officer, drove straight into pedestrians and took a shortcut through a backyard. She was back on the streets today on a ridiculously light bail.

Madison Forsyth sounds like she’s had a solid weekend, from WDIV4 4:

Police said they received a report on July 21 of a vehicle that had crashed into several parked cars and continued to drive in circles. According to the authoritiesOfficers from the Shelby Township Police Department located the vehicle and attempted to stop it, but the driver crashed into the patrol car. When another police patrol car arrived, the driver allegedly crashed into that vehicle as well and fled.

Police said she drove toward a group of people who had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit before driving through a backyard to escape police. The car came to a stop after hitting a utility pole.

Police said they conducted field sobriety tests because the driver — identified by police as Forsyth — appeared to be intoxicated at the time. A breathalyzer test reportedly showed her blood alcohol level was .25, more than three times the legal limit.

Foryth was charged with “… assault with a deadly weapon, fleeing and eluding, and operating while intoxicated,” WDIV reported. That’s a pretty long list of charges, but it looks like Foyth got off with a misdemeanor with bail of just $500. Since you only need to pay 10 percent of bail, Foyth was able to go home with a total of $50.

This is the connection that particularly angers Shelby County Sheriff Robert Shelide:

“I was equally shocked that this driver caused a disaster in Shelby Township, damaging multiple vehicles before driving straight into innocent civilians, fortunately no one was injured,” Shelide said. “I was stunned to hear that Forsyth was allowed to leave on such a low bond after all the damage and danger she caused.”

I hate to agree with a cop, but yeah, what the hell? It’s nothing, especially since Forsyth faces up to 15 years in prison, according to Detroit News. With the way the sentencing guidelines are, it’s unlikely she’ll get the maximum sentence because Forsyth has a clean record, but she’s still likely to face a serious prison sentence.

Drunk drivers are a menace on our roads and especially to police. Earlier this year, a police officer was lucky to survive a drunk driving accident. crashed into his active parking lot in Virginia.
