Dr. Craig Albanese Appointed CEO of Duke University Health System

Duke University Health System has appointed Dr. Craig Albanese as its next CEO.

Albanese will move into the top spot at the end of March. He will succeed Dr. A. Eugene Washington, who announced in the fall his plans to step down on June 30 from his leadership roles, including chairman of Duke University Health System and effective Head of Medical Affairs at Duke University.

Albanese has served as executive vice president and chief executive officer since joining the Durham, North Carolina-based health system just over a year ago. Albanese was previously the group’s senior vice president and chief medical officer of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. He has also held senior leadership roles at Stanford University, including vice president for quality improvement and performance at Stanford Children’s Health.

Duke University Health System operates three hospitals, more than 200 clinics, additional clinical affiliations, and a network of community hospitals that are part of Duke Lifepoint. The health system employs more than 23,000 full-time staff and reports nearly 67,000 inpatient admissions and nearly 4.7 million outpatient visits in fiscal year 2021.
